1 6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Volume 4 Issue 27 April 8th, 2016 Science Next Week Science Weekly Review This week we concluded our unit on the Olympics and discussed what other underlying factors could be found in specific years. Students concluded that political conflicts, racial unrest, and battling for world power were but a few tied to the Olympic Games. They also became aware of what a political cartoon is and how it can influence people. NEXT WEEK We will be moving forward to the expansion of trade routes and the impact the interaction between China and the West had on the world. A key feature we will be exploring is the Silk Road in our quest to answer the new compelling question,’ Did the Chinese and Romans know each other?’ April 5 th – 7 th – ELA State Test April 9 th – Jack Hirsh; Hypnotist @ 7pm April 13 th – End of Marking Period 3 April 13 th – 15 th – Math State Test April 15 th – PTO Middle School Dance April 25 th – April 29 th – Spring Recess 4/4 The students collected data on how heat transfers from the first floor to the second floor in a two story home. 4/5 The students analyzed graphed the data collected. 4/6 the students wrote and explanation on how heat is transferred in a two story home and they came up with plans on how they could keep an attic cooler by limiting the amount of radiation. 4/7 The students experimented with different materials on their model homes to see how these materials absorbed and transferred heat. 4/8 The students watched a video on heat transfer and completed a crossword on heat transfer. 4/11 The students will graph the data that they collected from the experiment on Thursday. 4/12 The students will begin research on penguins and climate change. 4/13 The students will begin writing essays on penguins and climate change. 4/14 The students begin their final copies of the essays. 4/15 The students will hand in their final copies of the essays. They may finish these in class.

2 6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Math with Ms. York Week in Review This week students have been reviewing for the Math State Test. Students have been taking old NYS Tests, working in their green 6 th grade practice test books, and we have wrapped up the week by playing Kahoot review. Volume 4 Issue 27 April 8th, 2016 Take A Peek At Next Weeks Math!  Monday 4.4 NYS Testing REVIEW  Tuesday 4.5 NYS Testing REVIEW  Wednesday 4.6 NYS Testing REVIEW  Thursday 4.7 NYS Testing REVIEW  Friday 4.8 NYS Testing REVIEW 7 Instructional Days Until the Math State Test April 13 th – April 15 th ELA with Mr. Knowles *All students are required to read at least three AR books every marking period. One of these books has to be based on Social Studies. The three AR books and quizzes will be due on April 13, 2016. This past week students continued Module #4, Unit 1. In this research based module, students are exploring the benefits and harmful consequences of the use of the controversial pesticide DDT. In Unit 1, students read, journaled, and used evidence to support their analysis of chapters 10-11 from the novel Frightful’s Mountain by Jean Craighead George. Students used the NYSED 2 and 4 point rubric to score their responses. We also read, responded, and scored practice Books 1 and 3 from the NYS testing Program for ELA. ELA Next Week Next week students will take the ELA State Test, April 5 th -7 th. Please encourage your child to do their best on their test! Before Important Tests, Make Sure Your Child: Gets a good night's sleep. Eats a wholesome breakfast. Dresses comfortably. Arrives at school on time. Has all necessary materials (book to read when finished). Avoids stressful situations prior to testing.
