2 The Challenges & Questions Loneliness: 1,000,000 people over 75 years of age who live alone say TV is their main form of company Mental Illness: Up to 5,000,000 over the age of 50 will experience an episode of mental ill health. Up to 60% of care home residents experience low mood or depression. Dementia: Up to 850,000 people living with dementia across the UK. Drive for Dementia Friendly Communities but where is the prevention agenda? How do we use sport to ensure older people age well when sporting legacies & media messages are to: “Inspire A generation” How do we ensure the over 50’s “Get Inspired” How can we build on community assets, unite communities and generations? © Sporting Memories Network CIC

3 Heart of Our Work Weekly groups & activities across the UK including area projects in: Libraries & Community Settings in East Lothian, West Lothian, Midlothian, Edinburgh, Glasgow, NE Lincolnshire, Leeds, York, Wigan, Sheffield, South Gloucestershire, Bristol, London, Tyne & Wear as well as, individual groups in NHS Wards, care homes and at sports clubs including the MCC. New for 2015 includes Middlesbrough, Jersey, North & South Lanarkshire. © Sporting Memories Network CIC

4 Promoting health & exercise © Sporting Memories Network CIC The groups are volunteer led – activities are chosen by the group. The men facilitate their own session once a month. Working with over 400 organisations: National Governing Bodies County Sports Partnerships Community Foundations of professional Football, Cricket, Rugby Union and Rugby League Clubs Local Public Health Teams Councils, CCG’s & Health & Wellbeing Boards National Football Museum MCC, PFA, BRDC Schools and colleges Chairing the Sport & Leisure Task Group for PM’s Challenge on Dementia with Alzheimer’s Society

8 Three years funding from The Life Changes Trust to roll out 55 weekly sporting memories groups across central Scotland and contribute to the creation of new dementia friendly communities Monthly meetings of the ‘Supporters Club’ will provide a forum for carers to also enjoy the activities, gain information from supporting organisations and join together with others living with dementia to help shape the groups and develop the projects further. 2015 © Sporting Memories Network CIC
