Mental Health Landscape 1 in 4 people will at some point in any given year experience mental illness (CALM, 2015; WHO, 2014). 340,000+ people on Merseyside will experience mental illness at some stage in their life. They are more common in densely populated urban areas where access to services and socio-economic deprivation is highest; they are further exacerbated in times of economic austerity (Census, 2001). In 2013, 6,233 people died by suicide: 78% were men (CALM, 2014; ONS, 2014). Approximately 78% of children (aged 5-15 years-old) and (35% of aged 16+) with anxiety or diagnosable depression are not in contact with mental health services (Minded, 2015). Around 25% of adults experience depression by age 21; 75% of all adult mental disorders are experienced by age 21 and 50% by age 14 (Minded, 2015). People who use mental health services are at an increased risk of a range of physical illnesses including CHD, diabetes, infections and respiratory diseases (Phelan et al, 2001).
