7 Regions of Southeast Asia Mainland Southeast Asia –The peninsula between the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean –Includes: Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam Mountains, valleys, plateaus cover most of this area Rivers: Irrawaddy, Salween, Chao Phraya, Mekong, Red River

8 Regions of Southeast Asia Island Southeast Asia –Many islands spread across thousands of miles Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines –Archipelagos- chains of islands make up a lot of these nations –Indonesia- 13,500 Islands –Philippines- 7,000 Islands

9 Climates of Southeast Asia Southeast Asia is mostly in the tropics –Between the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn Monsoons affect the climate (Wet and Dry) Monsoons helped to shape culture –Malays developed the lateen sail Caught the wind of the monsoons –Farmers depend on the monsoon rains for their crops Lateen Sail

10 Natural Resources Many natural resources exist in Southeast Asia –Supply: Tin Aluminum Nickel Oil Natural Gas Exports mostly to western countries Nickel Tin Oil Aluminum

11 Agricultural Resources Important Crops –Rice- allows for many people to live and eat –Corn –Rubber- tires, play ground balls, etc... –Coffee- some excellent coffees –Tea –Spices- the reason that Europeans arrived here –Lumber- mahogany, teak –Coconuts- drinks, milk, coconut shell bras

12 Diverse Region Geography leads to ethnic and cultural diversity –Ex: Mountains keep groups of people apart Wealthier ethnic groups control the better land Poorer groups get what is left –Creates a unique culture that is different from the rest of the country Ex: Laos and Malaysia
