2. What is argumentative writing?  Argumentative writing is very similar to persuasive writing.  In our Writing Coach books, you will see the word persuasive, each time you see that word replace it with argumentative

3. What is argumentative writing?  present an argument about a given topic.  Develop a claim. A claim expresses a new idea or a statement For example: People should not smoke.

4. Components of an Argumentative Essay  Introduction that establishes the writer’s claim.  3 paragraphs citing three reasons to support (back) the writer’s claim.  Each reason requires proof/evidence, such as examples, facts, statistics, expert opinions (research).

5. Continued…  One paragraph must present an idea from the opposing claim, and redirect the reader back to the author’s claims  The conclusion reaffirms the writer’s claim and reasons for it

Persuasive Writing vs. Argumentative Writing  Persuasive Essays ~convince the reader to agree with the writer’s opinion ~a thesis statement that presents the writer’s claim (opinion about the topic) ~reasons to support the writer’s claim ~appeal to the reader’s emotions  Argumentative Essays ~present the reader with the writer’s claim or argument ~a thesis statement that presents the writer’s claim (opinion about the topic) ~reasons to support the writer’s claim ~research to support the reasons presented by the reader (examples, facts, statistics, expert opinions) * Must present the opposing claim

7. Introduction  Grab your reader!  Can be done with a lead/grabber: an interesting opening that grabs the readers’ attention

8. Introduction Continued  You can… 1. ask a question 2. use an anecdote (brief stories that illustrate a point) 3. present a hypothetical situation 4. provide a strong detail (facts, statistics) 5. Quote relevant to the topic

9. Introduction Continued  Clear thesis statement or position  A thesis statement states your position (claim or position) on the issue so that your audience knows what you are supporting

10. Body Paragraphs *Build your case…  Write one paragraph for each argument/reason  3 paragraphs to support your position  Each paragraph includes a reason/evidence to support your position

11. Body paragraphs continued  One paragraph to present a counter- argument (opposing view)  Your counter-argument should be shown to be less important than your arguments (counter-argument is a snapshot of the opposing claim)  Remember to… * Logically organize your supporting details

12. Conclusion  Restatement of your position  Echoing the language of your thesis statement (will help to cement it in readers’ minds)

13. Conclusion cont.  Memorable ending *Could be a call to action (encourages audience to take action)  Perhaps a memorable quote by Steve Jobs

15. Argumentative Writing  You have read several texts (articles/book) and watched numerous video clips describing Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs is best known for his role in changing the way technology is used. Depending on the source, Steve Jobs was known for having positive and negative characteristics.  Write an essay explaining your position on whether you believe Steve Jobs represented the qualities of an effectual and powerful boss or the qualities of a greedy and tyrannical leader. Be specific with your position by clearly stating your claim. Use at least 2 written sources and 1 media source to support your position. Use facts and examples to support your position.
