Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries The Riches of the Sea – Norway`s Future Fishing since immemorial time Since immemorial time, people in Norway have made a living from fishing, whaling and sealing. The Vikings (from 800 to 1050 A.D.) carried on seining after cod, salmon and herring Ever since the 12th century, dried fish (stockfish) has been an important export product The fisheries has been the very basis of life and culture on the coast, and the fishing industry is still one of Norway’s most important export industries.

Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries The Riches of the Sea – Norway`s Future Both surrounded by countries attractive as industrial host countries Both score below the OECD 2% of R&D spendings in %-age of GDP (Norway 1,7% of GDP, Canada 1,6%) Both countries have lot’s of natural assets Norway and Canada - same challenges and opportunities

Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries The Riches of the Sea – Norway`s Future Particular challenges Vulnerable to changes in trade regimes, technical barriers to trade Relatively high labour costs Our industry depends on policy in 4 Ministries - Policies have been poorly integrated Our industry is a large user of R&D based knowledge.
