Schizophrenia A very serious mental illness in which someone cannot think or behave normally and often experiences delusions While the term schizophrenia means “split mind,” it refers to emotions and thought processes, not personalities.

Undifferentiated Schizophrenia is a classification used when a person has symptoms from different types of schizophrenia.

Treatment? There is no cure but can be treated Medications “recovery-oriented psychosocial treatments” Rehabilitation practices

Who can get this disorder? Both men and women are affected equally no matter what ethnicity Symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions usually start between ages 16 and 30. Men tend to experience symptoms a little earlier than women. Schizophrenia rarely occurs in children, but awareness of childhood-onset schizophrenia is increasing.

Can it be inherited? People whose closer relatives have this disorder are more likely to develop the disorder then those who have no relatives with it A child whose parent has schizophrenia has about a 10 % chance of developing schizophrenia themselves.

Interesting fact “Nearly one-third of those diagnosed with schizophrenia will attempt suicide.” “About 10 percent of those with the diagnosis will commit suicide within 20 years of the beginning of the disorder”

Paranoid Schizophrenia Involves delusions and erroneous beliefs Misinterpretation of experiences Auditory hallucinations “voices” distinct from a person’s own thoughts

Disorganized Schizophrenia Also called “hebephrenic” Includes different types of disorganization in speech and behavior Talk in circles or off-topic Will often have a flat expression or behave inappropriately in social situations

Catatonic Schizophrenia Extreme immobility and unresponsiveness “copy-cat” behavior Symptoms are related to psychomotor disturbances, such as immobility or the persistent refusal of orders and instructions without reason (negativism)
