2  Native Americans: Peace must be maintained with our N.A. neighbors  Annexation: We cannot support ourselves therefore we need to be annexed by the USA  Relations with Mexico: Negotiation is the only way to lasting peace  Capital: Austin is not safe: It is too close to Mexico  Finances: We are too far in debt to do anything else but focus on reducing the debt.

3  Native Americans: They are inferior and have no right to land in Texas.  Annexation: We should remain independent or the blood of our heroes was shed in vain.  Relations with Mexico: We must defeat our enemy to insure our empire.  Capital: Austin should be the capital to honor the “Father of Texas”  Finances: In order for our empire to succeed, money must be spent.

4  The people of Texas must have access to public education.  The Texas Congress set aside thousands of acres in EACH county for schools.  Two Texas Universities were opened with Lamar’s influence: The University of Texas and Texas A&M University.

5  Conflicts were best resolved by force.  Cherokee Policy: Houston negotiated it, but Lamar told Congress to reject it because he believed some of the Cherokee were allied with Mexico.

6  Houston wanted the Archives moved from Austin to Houston. Citizens thought Houston was moving the capital from Austin to Houston. The citizens attacked troops and Texas Rangers. The result was the archives remained in Austin as well as the capital.

7  Professionals were needed such as doctors, lawyers, and teachers to help Texas be successful as a Republic.

9  These events occurred in THIS Order: Cordova Rebellion: Cherokees and Tejanos supported the Mexicans who rebelled against Texas Santa Fe Expedition: Lamar wanted to expand west and annex Santa Fe. Texas troops were captured by Mexican troops and marched to Mexico City. Battle of Salado Creek: Mexican troops seized San Antonio. Texas troops and Texas Rangers defeat Mexican troops which ends second invasion of San Antonio by Mexico. Mier Expedition: Texas to clear Mexican troops from South Texas. 300 Texas troops break off and invade Mexico. Mexico captures Texas troops and forces them to draw beans. A white bean meant they would live. A black bean meant they would die. (Most that drew the black beans were officers.

12  People who use and settle on land that does not belong to them  Squatters were beneficial to Texas because they eventually became successful ranchers who paid taxes.

13  They came to Texas to grow cotton, buy cheap land, and take advantage of the many business opportunities that Texas had to offer

15  Great Britain could buy all of the Texas Cotton they wanted/needed as well as sell British goods in the Republic of Texas

16  Texas newspapers printed articles on current events as well as expressed opinions about the Texas government and its leaders.

17  Columbia: 1 st capital  Houston: 2 nd capital voted on by the Texas Congress and named for Sam Houston  Austin: permanent capital that was named for Stephen F. Austin, but Sam Houston thought it was too close to Mexico and the Native Americans.

18  Mexicans: did not support the Republic of Texas  Tejanos: Many were neutral, but some wanted to remain with Mexico while others supported the Republic  Native Americans: Some were hostile (against) the Republic while others were friendly or nuetral.  Anglo-Americans: Many were Texans who supported the Republic and wanted to be annexed by the United States.

19  Cordova Rebellion: Cherokees and Tejanos supported by Mexico rebelled against Texas  Battle of Neches: Lamar accused Cherokees of being allied with Mexico, ordered them out of Texas, but Cherokees could remain until after their harvest. Texas attacked before the harvest so the Cherokees fled across the Red River into Oklahoma to Indian territory  Council House Fight: Native Americans were to bring all prisoners to the meeting but only brought 1. Texas attacked the Comanche. The Comanche responded by killing all of the other prisoners  Grand Council Near Waco: Houston met with the Comanche and other tribes to tell them that Lamar’s policies had ended to try and negotiate peace.
