5 John Winthrop O Governor of Massachusetts Bay O He will WIN by THROWING PEOPLE out Note: The Puritans settled in Massachussets Bay. They were very picky (The Picky Puritans) about their religion. The kicked people out who did not share their religious beliefs.

6 Roger Williams O Roger Williams HIT THE ROAD to RHODE ISLAND O He was thrown out of Massachusetts O He believed in equality for ALL O He paid the Native Americans for land O Colonists weren’t required to attend a certain church O Colonists did not have to attend church in order to vote O He believed in separation of church and state

7 Thomas Hooker O Thomas Hooker HOOKED it down to Connecticut O He was also kicked out of Massachusetts Bay O He was the inspiration behind the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut O The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut limited the power of the governor

8 William Penn O Found present day Pennsylvania O Quakers could live according to their religious beliefs and make political decisions based on those beliefs O William Penn’s Frame of Government O Government that provided political and religious freedom to all O Created an elected legislature as a feature of Pennsylvania's self- government

9 Anne Hutchinson O Also left Massachusetts due to different religious beliefs. O She was the sister-in-law of John Wheelwright (you will learn about him in a second) O The PICKY PURITANS didn’t like her because…. O She held bible studies in her home O Challenged church authority O Said God spoke directly to her

17 First Great Awakening O Proclaimed salvation for all, not just those predestined O Stimulated growth in all religions O Began the development of non-denomational colleges. O Encouraged the ideas equality and challenged authority O Churches welcomed all groups of women, African American’s and American Indiana tribes and inspired colonist to help others.
