Why did attitudes to the roles of men and women change? The Suffragette movement showed that women were not prepared to be treated as second class citizens. Women did work during the 1st and 2nd WW’s that had been thought of as male work (they did it well). Labour Govt of 1964-70 & 1974-79 was dedicated to the equal rights of women The UN Declaration of Human Rights And the development of the feminist movement meant equal rights had to be accepted Women good at counselling and health care. Equal rights developed in other countries

Christian attitudes Traditional roles: Women – bring up children, run Christian home Men – provide for family and lead in religion BECAUSE Bible – women not allowed to speak or teach in Church Creation story in Genesis2 – Adam created first so more important Jesus disciples were men Modern roles: Men and women equal roles. Women can be ministers and priests. BECAUSE Creation story in Genesis1 – men and women created equally and at the same time Bible – in Christ there is neither male or female Jesus treated women as his equals
6
Attitudes of Traditional Protestant Christianity to equality of women in the church Traditional Protestant Christianity Only men can be church leaders Jesus only chose men as his disciples It is church Tradition that Men are the Leaders of The church Evangelical Christians- traditional roles for men & women separate and different. St Paul uses Adam and Eve as evidence – Adam was created First. In the Bible St Paul teaches that women should not teach or Speak in church.
7
Modern Attitude of Protestant Christianity These branches of Christianity give men and women equal rights. They have women as ministers and priests. Church of England Methodist Church United Reformed Church Why? Genesis 1 says that God created male and Female at the same time in his image. In some of St Paul’s letters he teaches that men and women are Equal in Christ. There is evidence from the gospels that Jesus treated women as his equals. Female followers (disciples) stayed with Jesus when he was on the cross There is some Evidence of women Priests in the Early church Jesus appeared to his female followers (disciples) first after his resurrection.
8
Roman Catholic Attitudes to Equal Rights for Women in Religion The teaching of the Catholic Church is that men and women are equal and should have equal rights. BUT ONLY MEN CAN BE PRIESTS BECAUSE THE APOSTLES WERE ALL MEN. The third synod of bishops 1971, called for women to take part in the life and society of the church. Priests and bishops are considered successors of the apostles. This is known as APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION Only men can be priests because the priest represents Jesus in the Mass (holy communion). WHY Genesis 1 tells us that men and women are equal. Women cannot be ordained; they cannot be deacons, priests or bishops. WHY
9
Muslim attitudes Traditional roles: Different roles Women – bring up children as good Muslims, run Muslim home Men – provide for family, lead in religion, ensure children brought up good Muslims BECAUSE Qur’an teaches God gave men stronger physique to provide Women created to bear children Modern roles: Men and women equal roles in religion and education. Women should have career – but role as mother takes priority. Very few accept women imams BECAUSE Qur’an teaches men and women equal in religion and education Muhammad encouraged both men and women to worship at the mosque

Christians should promote racial harmony and should not be racist because… Teaching of Jesus - Parable of the Good Samaritan Example of Jesus – he treated a Samaritan woman as his equal + and black African help carry his cross Bible teaches all nations are equal All Christian churches have issued statements condemning racism
13
Muslims should promote racial harmony and should not be racist because… Qur’an teaches all races are equal in the eyes of God. Muhammad said every Muslim is a brother to every other Muslim so should be no racism among Muslims. Muhammad led by example – had a black African as first prayer caller.

The Government and Community Cohesion The Govt passes laws to promote community cohesion. These laws are against racism and discrimination. Community cohesion was part of the National Curriculum. Why is it important? There have been examples of violence and civil unrest. There is a danger of people rioting If people live separate and parallel lives it is easy for a lack of understanding to create prejudice.

Multi FAITH society Many different RELIGIONS living together in one society
16
Multi faith society BENEFITS Understanding and tolerance Less violence Practice own religion more seriously Consider own beliefs Bring religious ideas out for people to think about PROBLEMS for RELIGION Conversion Bringing up children Mixed marriages
17
Christian attitudes to other religions Many believe Respect other religions BUT have right to convert others. Christianity is only true religion. BECAUSE Jesus - “No one comes to the Father except through me” Jesus said love your neighbour – that means you want them to get to heaven so need to convert them. Some believe All religions equal and just different ways of finding God. Respect other religions – don’t need to convert them. BECAUSE Jesus – “in my Father’s house are many rooms” Don’t take Bible literally Other religions lead good and holy lives
18
Muslim attitudes to other religions Many believe Respect other religions BUT have right to convert others. Islam is only true religion and others are wrong. BECAUSE Qur’an teaches that: Muhammad given God’s final and perfect revelation Only Muslims will go to heaven Muslims should try to convert non-Muslims Some believe All religions equal and contain some truth. Just different ways of finding God. BECAUSE Qur’an teaches God is all merciful – would not let good followers of other religions go to Hell.
