Applications of Digital Forensics Michael Jones
2
Digital Forensics Principles Capture data – According to a rigorous framework – Opportunistic data is rarely used Analyse data – Using a variety of tools – Analysis uses rigorous methods These principles can be applied to other areas Michael JonesApplications of Digital Forensics2
3
Example Applications SEO – Search engine optimisation SEM – Search engine marketing General data analysis – Data ‘mining’ – far more complex analysis – Used in the design of shops, roads, and many products Michael JonesApplications of Digital Forensics3
4
SEO and SEM Search Engine Optimisation – Improving score on search engines – Continuous process Search Engine Marketing – Finding and ‘owning’ search terms Michael JonesApplications of Digital Forensics4

SEO and SEM in Action A presentation supplied by Andy Headington of Adido Solutions The presentation can be found here: – http://dec.bournemouth.ac.uk/~mjones/Files/Adi do-Analysing_Web_Browsing.pdf http://dec.bournemouth.ac.uk/~mjones/Files/Adi do-Analysing_Web_Browsing.pdf Michael JonesApplications of Digital Forensics5

Data Analysis Classic data analysis can either operate on: – Opportunistic data – Designed data – Which is better? Mostly ‘dead’ forensics – Analysis takes place after all the data is captured Some ‘live’ forensics – E.g., intrusion detection system Michael JonesApplications of Digital Forensics6
7
Example: Air Traffic Control Example problem: is the air traffic system able to cope with specific types of emergencies? Approach: – Design a scenario and plan a number of events (e.g., over a 12 hour period) – Before – areate the detail of the events using a simulator – ‘run’ the simulation using people carrying out their ‘normal’ duties (and capture data) – After – a nalyse the captured data Michael JonesApplications of Digital Forensics7
8
Example: Supermarket Design Forensic analysis of: – Past consumer activities in similar stores – Local area: demographics, road system, competitors, etc. Analysis: – Where should the tills, aisles, services (e.g., bakery) be placed Michael JonesApplications of Digital Forensics8
9
Example: Supermarket Stocking Forensic analysis of: – Customer buying habits In previous years, months – Weather – TV and social media Analysis: – What (and how much) to stock Michael JonesApplications of Digital Forensics9
10
Example: Road System Design Example: Canford Bottom ‘hamburger’ roundabout Finished in June 2012 Design based on forensic analysis of: – Usage of feeder roads and accidents on the previous roundabout – Usage of surrounding roads- e.g., 2 mile radius Simulations built, run and analysed Michael JonesApplications of Digital Forensics10
11
Conclusions Many situations benefit from forensic analysis Forensic analysis is: – Rigorous – Expensive – Time consuming But what is the alternative? Michael JonesApplications of Digital Forensics11
