2 Luther: Justification by faith-- Humans are saved by faith alone. The Church: Faith comes from dedication to the Church. Both faith and good works(charity, acts of devotion, the sacraments, etc.) are necessary for salvation. Faith

3 Priests Luther:All believers have equal access to God and no other people in between are needed. There are no special sacramental functions belonging to any particular class. The Church: Catholic priests are necessary as only priests can perform the seven sacraments and correctly interpret the meaning of scripture. Priests must remain celibate.

4 The Bible Luther:The scriptures are the only source of true doctrine. Translating the Bible into common languages and making it available to all is necessary. The Church: Only the priesthood of the church can correctly interpret the meaning of the bible…do not try this at home!

5 Sacraments Luther:The Bible only documents two sacraments: baptism and the Lord’s Supper (called communion to distinguish the Protestant practice from the Catholic Eucharist). The Church: There are seven sacraments: baptism, Eucharist, confession, confirmation, marriage, holy orders, extreme unction (last rites). These can only be performed by a priest.
