Improper Fractions and Mixed Number

 An improper fraction is a fraction in which the numerator is larger than the denominator. Example: 7/3 The numerator 7 is larger than the denominator 3.

 A mixed number is a whole number and a fraction. Example: 2 ¾ 2 is a whole number and ¾ is a fraction.

Changing an improper fraction into a mixed number  To change an improper fraction into a mixed number you will divide the numerator by the denominator. Example: 7/3 7 divided by 3 3 will divide evenly into 7, 2 whole times (3x2=6) subtract 6 from 7 and there is 1 left over. Put this number over the denominator. The mixed number is 2 1/3.

Changing a mixed number into an improper fraction  To change a mixed number into an improper fraction multiply the denominator by the whole number. Next add the product and the numerator. This becomes the numerator and is put over the denominator that you started with. Example: 2 ¾ 4x2=8 8+3=11 11/4 is the improper fraction. So 2 ¾ = 11/4
