2. What are SATs? Statutory Attainment Tests The Key Stage 2 tests are designed to test pupils' knowledge and understanding of the Key Stage 2 programmes of study. They provide a snapshot of pupils' attainment at the end of the key stage. Pupils take tests in: English (Literacy) Mathematics (Numeracy) Science (currently biennial, 5% of schools in England, 5-10 children ‘randomly’ chosen – new tests for 2016) Your child will be given: a raw score (the number of marks awarded) a scaled score (100 being the expected standard) and confirmation of whether or not they attained the expected standard

3. National Standards Levels have been replaced by a national standard. At the end of Y6 your child will be categorised as: Working TOWARDS the expected standard (below average) Working AT the expected standard (average) Working AT A GREATER DEPTH within the expected standard (above average) N.B – There are no further tests as per previous years for ‘L6 children’

4. Maths (New Test Format) The maths test is split into three papers; Paper 1 = Arithmetic (30 minutes) – 40 marks* 36 questions! 5. Maths (Arithmetic Paper) Children are given all of the equipment they will require for each paper e.g. pencil, ruler, mirror, protractor Children may have questions read to them if necessary

English The new English test framework is now split into three different sections: Reading Paper = 50 marks (New Test Format) Grammar, Punctuation & Vocabulary = 50 marks Spelling = 20 marks NB: Writing is not assessed externally. Writing is teacher assessed throughout the year – all children will have a portfolio of independent work on which a judgement is made. Schools are moderated by external agencies to ensure accurate judgements are made.

Science (New Test Format) The science test is split into three papers; Paper 1 = 25 minutes Paper 2 = 25 minutes Paper 3 = 25 minutes Each paper generally tests a different set of science topics 5% of schools nationwide are randomly selected – approximately 9500 Y6 children. *5-10 Y6 children within a school are then chosen to sit the tests* Schools are informed by the end of March (Easter Holidays) – no news is good news! Science tests DO NOT take place during SATs week – Pupils will sit the tests within a two week period from Monday 6 th June School/Individual pupil results are not reported – only nationwide data – schools are not involved in the administration of these tests.

12. Statutory SATs Trialling All schools are now statutorially obliged to participate in trialling future SATs tests if selected! For example, 2018 Science SATs will be trialled this year. Y6 children will undertake trial SATs in one subject area only sometime between April & June – no trial tests will be administered during SATs week. All trial tests are administered externally – no feedback given Although trial schools are randomly chosen it is possible that a school could be selected two years running 

During the afternoons, children will be taking part in Physical Education activities, fun sessions and art activities. Breakfast Club – every day of SATs week (except Friday)…8.30am onwards…volunteers welcome!

15. What are we doing as a school? Informal English/Maths Homework clubs – children are welcome to attend at a lunchtime to complete homework tasks or ask for support 1-2-1& Intervention Grps – selected children receive additional support during afternoon sessions as per their needs (30-45mins per session). Targeted Support within the classroom Between January and May – SATs questions, Practice tests, mental maths challengers/tests.

16. How can you help your child in the week of SATs? Keep it calm. Keep it normal. Get to school with plenty of time. Encourage them to eat breakfast (attend Breakfast Club if possible). Let them relax in the evenings – if they don’ t know it at this stage they are unlikely to learn it now! Ask children about their tests after each day – encourage children not to worry about their performance...don’t dwell on mistakes...look forward towards Friday!
