2 The National Curriculum Changed in September 2014 In Autumn 2013 and Autumn 2015, distributed definitions of national expectations for each year group 'A small school that makes us feel big'

3 Compulsory national curriculum subjects at primary school are: English maths science design and technology history geography art and design music physical education (PE), including swimming computing ancient and modern foreign languages (at key stage 2) 'A small school that makes us feel big'

4 Other aspects Schools must provide Religious Education Schools often also teach - personal, social and health education (PSHE) citizenship modern foreign languages (at key stage 1) 'A small school that makes us feel big'

6 Year 1 Phonics Screening Check The check will take place in June when your child will read 40 words out loud to a teacher. You’ll find out how your child did, and their teacher will assess whether he or she needs extra help with reading. If your child doesn’t do well enough in the check they’ll have to do it again in Year 2. This test has not given us any new information in the past 'A small school that makes us feel big'

7 Key Stage 1 ie Year 2 Tests reading writing speaking and listening maths science The tasks and tests are taken when the school chooses. Your child’s teacher will use the child’s work (including spoken work and homework) to work out what level your child is at in each area. 'A small school that makes us feel big'

8 Year 2 Test papers Used to help the teacher come to a professional judgement Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling test – 1 paper Reading test – 2 papers Maths tests – 2 papers 'A small school that makes us feel big'

9 KS2 ie Year 6 tests Key stage 2 tests cover: English reading English grammar, punctuation and spelling Maths – arithmetic and problem solving and reasoning The tests are taken in mid-May (week beginning 9 May 2016) and last under 5 hours 30 minutes in total. You’ll get the results in July. When your child reaches the end of key stage 2 the teacher will also report on your child’s progress in English, maths and science. 10 Year 6 Test Papers Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling – 1 grammar paper and 1 spelling paper Reading – 1 paper with 3 non-thematic texts Maths – 1 arithmetic paper and 2 problem solving papers Writing – Teacher assessment Please note that an online times table test is being trialled this year 'A small school that makes us feel big'

11 Please note that these are the Government’s arrangements! Curriculum is now prescriptive, not skills based 'A small school that makes us feel big'

12 The new curriculum has higher expectations at each year group Children who have been working above national expectations in the past could now be working at national expectations now Progress is still being made They are not going backwards! 'A small school that makes us feel big'

13 Examples of raised expectations Year 2: Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables Year 3: Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables Year 4: Recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 x 12 By the end of KS2: Children are expected to be confident in multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting fractions and using algebra. 14 Teamwork What can parents do to help? Read with children Talk to them about what they are learning Times tables – practise! Random facts. Division facts Use the internet – links to be added to the website 'A small school that makes us feel big'

15 ActiveLearn Tool to be used to deliver the curriculum Can be accessed at home and at school Increased our resources, including books, in a cost effective way 'A small school that makes us feel big'

16 Individually tailored for each child Work set, both in school and at home, is specific to your child’s needs Could possibly be different to another child’s work 'A small school that makes us feel big'

17 Reading It is IMPORTANT that children read, particularly with an adult Need to work together to increase the opportunities children have for targeted reading Children benefit from reading hard copy books and online ebooks We will allocate appropriate ebooks to your child’s library for access at home The system monitors the reading done online 'A small school that makes us feel big'
