6 Writing for web Why write differently for the web? 1.People don’t read online, they scan 2.We need to guide our audiences 3.Most of us rely on Google 4.Content must be accessible, no exceptions 5.Users expect content to always be up to date

7 Writing for web The 5 golden rules 1.Know your audience 2.Get to the point 3.Make them want to read it 4.White space is your friend 5.Create a journey

8 Writing for web Things to avoid –Underlining text: Underlined text will often be mistaken for links –Uppercase (capslock): It's harder to read and actually has less impact than you might think. –Italics: computer screens have difficulty displaying italic letters. –Title case in headings: Use regular ‘sentence case’, e.g. Gone with the wind, not Gone With the Wind. –Capital letters: Should only be used for proper nouns, and to describe specific job roles (‘she is the Head of Finance’) – don’t use capitals for emphasis or for ‘important’ words. –Coloured fonts – accessibility + style conflict –Click here – accessibility –Acronyms – write out in full first

9 Creating new content What do you think you need to think about when creating a new page? Ask yourself –What is the point –Who is it for / aimed at Consider the content flowchart –Have you got enough content? –Have you checked with knowledge owner?
