Overall aim of the Standard is to ‘enable organisations establish the systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, use and consumption’ Intended to apply to all types and sizes of organisation Can be used independently or integrated with any other management system ISO 50001 is to enable organisations to establish the systems and process necessary to improve energy performance Intended to lead to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and energy cost Specifies energy management system (EnMS) requirements Based on common elements of ISO management system standards, ensuring a high level of compatibility notably with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. ISO 50001: Energy Management System (EnMS) Requirements with guidance for use

Assist organisations in making better use of their existing energy consuming assets Create transparency and facilitate communication on the management of energy resources Promote energy management best practices and reinforce good energy management behaviours Assist facilities in evaluating and prioritising the implementation of new energy-efficient technologies Provide a framework for promoting energy efficiency throughout the supply chain Facilitate energy management improvements for greenhouse gas emission reduction projects Allow integration with other organisational management systems such as environmental, and health and safety. ISO 50001 Benefits

Ensure the organisation’s energy management system conforms with the stated policy Demonstrate to stakeholders the commitment of the organisation to improving their energy performance and reducing their carbon footprint Improve the organisation’s energy performance in a systematic way and reduce associated risks. Benefits of 3rd Party Certification to ISO 50001

Purpose of ISO 50001 Scope and boundaries of an EnMS as required by ISO 50001 A guarantee of Performance? Subjectivity in auditing process ISO 50001 and its relationship to other management systems. ISO 50001 - Purpose, Scope and Applications

Energy Policy Planning Legal and other requirements Energy review Energy baseline Energy performance indicators Energy objectives, energy targets and energy management action plans Planning Legal and other requirements Energy review Energy baseline Energy performance indicators Energy objectives, energy targets and energy management action plans Continual Improvement Implementation and Operation Competence, training and awareness Communication Documentation requirements Control of documents Operational control Design Procurement of energy services, products, equipment and energy Implementation and Operation Competence, training and awareness Communication Documentation requirements Control of documents Operational control Design Procurement of energy services, products, equipment and energy Checking Monitoring, measurement and analysis Evaluation of compliance with legal requirements and other requirements Internal audit of the EnMS Nonconformities, correction, corrective action and preventive action Control of Records Checking Monitoring, measurement and analysis Evaluation of compliance with legal requirements and other requirements Internal audit of the EnMS Nonconformities, correction, corrective action and preventive action Control of Records Management Review

Based on Plan – Do – Check – Act

Develop, record and maintain an energy review Document the methodology and criteria used to develop the energy review Update energy review at defined intervals Update energy review in response to major changes in facilities, equipment, systems, or processes Analyse energy use and consumption based on measurement and other data Identify the areas of significant energy use based on analysis of energy use and consumption Identify, prioritise and record opportunities for improving energy performance. Energy Review [4.4.3]

Determination of the organisation’s energy performance based on data and other information, leading to identification of opportunities for improvement Energy Review Manner or kind of application of energy Energy Use Quantity of energy applied Energy Consumption

a) Analyse energy use and consumption based on measurement and other data, i.e. identify current energy sources; evaluate past and present energy use and consumption. Developing the Energy Review [1]

b) Identify the areas of significant energy use based on analysis of energy use and consumption, i.e. identify the facilities, equipment, systems, processes and personnel working for, or on behalf of, the organisation that significantly affect the energy use and consumption; identify other relevant variables affecting significant energy uses; determine the current energy performance of facilities, equipment, systems and processes relating to identified significant energy uses; estimate future energy use and consumption. Developing the Energy Review [2]

c) Identify, prioritise and record opportunities for improving energy performance NOTEOpportunities can relate to potential sources of energy, use of renewable energy, or other alternative energy sources, such as waste energy. Developing the Energy Review [3]

Energy Review a) analyse energy use and consumption b) identify areas of significant energy use c) identify, prioritise and record opportunities for improvement Energy Review Process

Electricity Gas Diesel Heavy Fuel Oil Steam. Energy Sources

Identify current energy sources Obtain data through measurement or other means Analyse energy use and consumption Evaluate for both the past and present. Energy Use and Consumption Analysis

b) Identify the areas of significant energy use based on analysis of energy use and consumption, i.e. identify the facilities, equipment, systems, processes and personnel working for, or on behalf of, the organisation that significantly affect the energy use and consumption; identify other relevant variables affecting significant energy uses; determine the current energy performance of facilities, equipment, systems and processes relating to identified significant energy uses; estimate future energy use and consumption. Developing the Energy Review

Purpose of assigning significance:  Provides focus  Helps to assign objectives and targets  Use to establish baselines and energy performance indicators  Determines scope of EnMS o Control/Monitoring Requirements o Training Requirements  Use in auditing. Areas of Significant Energy Use

c) Identify, prioritise and record opportunities for improving energy performance NOTEOpportunities can relate to potential sources of energy, use of renewable energy, or other alternative energy sources, such as waste energy. Developing the Energy Review

Defined as being the quantitative reference(s) providing a basis for comparison of energy performance Notes also given with the definition within ISO 50001: An energy baseline reflects a specified period of time An energy baseline can be normalized using variables which affect energy use and/or consumption, e.g. production level, degree days (outdoor temperature) etc. The energy baseline is also used for calculation of energy savings, as a reference before and after implementation of energy performance improvement action. Energy Planning – Energy Baseline

Establish an energy baseline(s) using the information in the initial energy review, considering a data period suitable to the organisation’s energy use and consumption Changes in energy performance to be measured against the energy baseline(s) Energy baseline(s) to be maintained and recorded. Energy Baseline 4.4.4

Quantitative reference(s) providing a basis for comparison of energy performance Energy Baseline Quantitative value or measure of energy performance, as defined by the organisation Energy Performance Indicator EnPI

Should cover all areas where an organisation has or can have an impact on energy use and consumption. Certification Scope

Application Pre Audit Documentation and Planning (Stage 1) Certification Audit (Stage 2) Surveillance. Stages of Certification

LRQA Business Assurance helps you manage your systems and risks to improve and protect the current and future performance of your organisation. Who sees the bigger picture?
