Pronombres de objeto directo Función 1. Direct object pronouns, like direct object nouns, receive the action of the verb and answer the questions what. They agree in number and gender with the nouns they replace. Direct object pronouns are placed before a conjugated verb. Lavo la manta y la seco. Compro otro televisor porque lo necesito. I wash the blanket and dry it. I'm buying another television set because I need it.

Pronombres de objeto directo me me te you (familiar, singular) lo him, you (formal, masc. sing.); it (masculine) la her, you (formal, fem, sing.); it (feminine) Nos us Os you (familiar, plural) los them, you (formal, masc. pl.) las them, you (formal, fem, pl.)

Pronombres de objeto directo When a negative word precedes the verb, the direct object pronoun is placed between it and the verb. Yo no lo voy a comprar. Nunca la lavo. I'm not going to buy it. I never wash it.

Pronombres de objeto directo 2. When there are two verbs in the sentence direct object pronouns may follow and be attached to an infinitive or a present participle. There is absolutely no difference in the meaning or emphasis of the pronoun based on its placement before the conjugated verb or after the infinitive or present participle. La voy a lavar ahora. Voy a lavarla ahora. La estoy lavando ahora. Estoy lavándola ahora. I'm going to wash it now. I'm washing it now.

Prombres de objeto indirecto An indirect object is usually a person receiving the action or the object in the sentence (whom). The pronouns in Spanish are basically the same as the ones used for the direct objects, with the exception of the third person. It is important to remember that in Spanish, anytime that an indirect object is expressed, the pronoun must be present even if the indirect object is expressed in some other way (i.e., prepositional clause). Singular Me (me)Te (you) Le/se (him/her/it) Plural Nos (us) Os (you [all]) Les/se (them)

Pronombres de objeto indirecto SpanishEnglish With prepositional clause (Tú) Le das el libro a Pedro You give the book to Pedro No prepositional clause (Tú) Le das el libro You give him the book [incorrect to express a prepositional clause]. With prepositional clause Yo te doy el libro [a ti: redundant/emphasis] I give the book to you No prepositional clause Yo te doy el libroI give you the book.
7
Note how in both languages we can use the prepositional clause to know who is receiving the book. The prepositional clause is mainly used for clarification or for emphasis. Generally, in Spanish the prepositional clause is used at the end, whereas in English it would be incorrect to use it sometimes, as in the second sentence if the pronoun or noun has not been referenced. In that case, we can identify the indirect object by using the name: "You give Pedro the book."

Pronombres de objeto directo e indirecto Using the Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns at the Same Time When both pronouns are used, they will continue to be placed in front of the conjugated verb (linguists say that these pronouns become part of the verb) or attached to the verb that is not conjugated.
9
Pronombres de objeto directo e indirecto Remember that you might not see the subject expressed at the beginning of the sentence due to the fact that it is implied in the verb. However, a personal pronoun or name of the subject could be placed at the beginning of the sentence. REMEMBER ID indirect (object pronoun) before direct (object pronoun) and reflexive before all of them RID

Pronombres de objeto directo e indirecto a la vez When le and les are followed by lo la los las they must be replaced by SE. Remember: Lola no es lela. Mis padres les enviaron las cartas a ellos Mis padres ___________________________________ Tú les diste el libro ayer _________________________ Vas a servirle a los muchachos el pescado con papas fritas. __________________________________________________________
