22
Unit objective The student will be able to understand the connection between surface area, the solar cell and nanotechnology
23
Nanotechnology How has nanotechnology increased the energy absorbed from the sun by the solar cell? nanoparticle nanotubes titanium oxide improving efficiency cheap solar cells How does nanotechnology lower the cost of manufacturing solar cells?
24
Lesson Objectives: The students will be able to answer basic questions about the process of turning light energy into electrical energy.
25
Student Background The students should have knowledge of the electron-proton-neutron model of the atom.
26
Student Background The students should have knowledge of how to determine the surface area of geometric shapes.

KWL What I KNOW about solar cells What I WANT to Know about solar cells What I LEARNED about solar cells
29
Activity 1 – Introduction and Reading Passage The students will research the solar cell that was assigned.
30
Activity 1: Even Groups The student will draw an illustration of a solar cell (PV CELL) and explain how energy is produced.
31
Activity 1: Odd Groups The student will draw an illustration of a solar cell (Dye Sensitized CELL) and explain how energy is produced.
32
Homework The students will view the YouToube Video The Power of the Sun - The Science of the Silicon Solar Cell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0hckM8TKY0&NR=1 Next Generation of Cheap Solar Cells http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMnx5tFrDDc&feature=related
33
Lesson Objective 2: Students will design a building that incorporates solar panels to produce energy. 1. The student will use graph paper to draw their Blue Print. 2. The student will use geometric shapes in the design of their building. 3. The student will give the total surface area of the design of their building. 4. The student will give the total surface area of the part of the building that is covered by the solar panels. 5.The student will give the ratio of the Total surface area of the building and the Total area covered by the solar panels. R = Total surface area of the building Total area covered by the solar cell
35
Home Assignment: 7. The student will give an itemized cost of the solar panels. This will be found by researching the internet. This information will be listed in a spread sheet. The spread sheet will include: Dimensions (area) of each solar panel, watts per solar panel, price per solar panel, state tax if any, total cost of all solar panels purchased.
