Plot Summary Shakespeare’s Macbeth is the tragic story of unrestrained and blind ambition as a Scottish nobleman, Macbeth, becomes wrought with evil desire on his quest for power. After hearing a prophetic announcement that he will become the king, Macbeth, decides to hasten the process by murdering the loved and respected King Duncan. Upon seizing the throne, Macbeth proceeds to banish and kill those who threaten his rule.

Rivaling his own desire is that of his wife, Lady Macbeth, who aids and drives her husband to commit his treasonous act of regicide. Friends, noblemen, women, children and Scotland itself are all threatened by the tyrannous rule of Macbeth. Guilt and uncertainty shroud Macbeth as he battles for control of his kingdom and himself, all the while supernatural forces watch over, and an army rises against him. Summary Continued...

Macbeth Macbeth is a Scottish general who is led to wicked thoughts by the prophecies of the three witches. Macbeth is a brave soldier and a powerful man, but he is not a virtuous one. He is easily tempted into murder to fulfill his ambitions to the throne, and once he is crowned King of Scotland, he embarks on further atrocities with increasing ease. Macbeth is never comfortable in his role as a criminal. He is unable to bear the psychological consequences of his atrocities.

Lady Macbeth Macbeth’s wife, a deeply ambitious woman who lusts for power and position. Early in the play she seems to be the stronger and more ruthless of the two, as she urges her husband to kill Duncan and seize the crown. After the bloodshed begins, however, Lady Macbeth falls victim to guilt and madness to an even greater degree than her husband. Her conscience affects her to such an extent that she eventually commits suicide.

Define (use the red glossary) Monologue Soliloquy Simile Metaphor

Tragic Hero Shakespeare’s tragedies contain an archetype of the tragic hero. The hero falls from greatness due to a tragic flaw, such as pride. Freewill is often the hero’s downfall, meaning it is his own choice. By the end of the play, the tragic hero often learns a moral lesson.

Five Act Structure All of Shakespeare’s plays follow a five act structure, which contain Introduction, Complication, Rising Acting, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution.

Act I Serves as the introduction, where characters and complications are introduced.

Act II Sees the complication develop and the rising action build toward an undeniable point of no return.

Act III Presents a climactic moment, which signifies a point of no return and is ultimately the cause for the tragic hero’s downfall.

Act IV The falling action begins to see the world of the tragic hero unravel as he continues to be brought down by his unavoidable tragic flaw.

Act V Brings about the resolution, often referred to as a catastrophe for the tragic hero. In Act V, the tragic hero is aware of the moral consequences of his actions; typically this insight occurs shortly before the hero’s death.
