Parent University Third Grade Caitlyn Mondello October 29, 2015

Common Core State Standards ▪ Common Core – Organized by grade level math topic – These primarily guide instruction ▪ Mathematical Practice Standards – Intended to develop “mathematical thinkers” – These are interwoven in all lessons and in all grades

Math Practice Standards ▪ Making sense of problems and persevere in solving them ▪ Reason abstractly and quantitatively ▪ Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others ▪ Model with mathematics ▪ Use appropriate tools strategically ▪ Attend to precision ▪ Look for and make use of structure ▪ Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Four Critical Areas in 3 rd Grade ▪ Multiplication and Division strategies for multiplication and division within 100 ▪ Developing an understanding of fractions ▪ Understanding arrays and area ▪ Analyzing two-dimensional shapes

Starting with Multiplication ▪ Common Core Standard Operations and Algebraic Thinking.7: Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division. ▪ Other Strategies include: – Distributive Property- Associative Property – Commutative Property- Number Line – Repeated Addition- Skip Count – Array- Equal Groups – Use a times table chart

Strategies of Multiplication

Commutative Property ▪ You can change the order of the factors and the product will stay the same. ▪ Example: 5 x 6 = 307 x 6 = 42 6 x 5 = 306 x 7 = 42

Associative Property ▪ You can change the grouping of the factors using parentheses and the product will stay the same. ▪ Example: 4 x 3 x 2 = 24 (4 x 3) x 2 = 24

Distributive Property ▪ To multiply a sum by a number, you must by multiply each addend by the number and add the products. ▪ Break up an unfamiliar fact into a fact that they know well. – 7’s – 5 +2 – 8’s – 5+3, 2+2+2+2 ▪ Example: 7 x 4 (5 + 2) x 4 (5 x 4) + (2 x 4) 20 + 8 = 28

Going Home ▪ Activities – Properties of Multiplication Reference Sheet – Multiples Songs ▪ Websites – Pearson Realize (www.pearsonrealize.com)www.pearsonrealize.com – FasttMath – Common Core Standards in Spanish (https://commoncore-espanol.sdcoe.net/Home )https://commoncore-espanol.sdcoe.net/Home – Translated Common Core Resources (Arabic, Khmer, Russian, Spanish, Vietnamese) (http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/cc/ )http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/cc/ – Unpacking the Standards (http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/acre/standards/common-core-tools)http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/acre/standards/common-core-tools
