Land Oil Spill – Much of marine oil pollution comes from oil spills on land – 12 spills per 4000 L are reported in Canada each day – 11 of the spills are from land
3
Oil Spill Cleanup The cleanup methods are similar to water oil spills Barriers are placed around the spill to contain it Sorbents are used to soak up oil
4
Oil is Not the Only Problem Many fluids are not as visible as water oil spills. – Most of the pollution in water are the result of run- off – Brake and antifreeze fluid or liquid fertilizer can end up dripping in our water system Contaminating Fluids
5
Environmental and Economic Impact Average cleaning cost – Is between $20 and $200 for every litre of water Economic Environmental Accidental spills and natural sources account for 30% of water pollution Half of the pollution is the result of our day-to- day use of fluids.
