18 Feb 2011 Warm UP– silently please 1) HOMEWORK DUE NEXT CLASS: pg. 112: # 6, 9, 20 - write basic information and clearly show all your steps so that someone else can easily follow your work WARM UP- find the equation of the line through (-3,0) and (1,8) a. y =21x – 3 b. y =21x + 8 c. y = 2x – 3 d. y = 2x + 6
2
Objective Students will use area formula for circles to calculate geometric probability. Homework Due TODAY pg. 458- plot each of the 4 shapes given on a grid that goes from 0 to 12 on both axises; calculate the area for each shape USE GRAPH PAPER incl. basic info and show all steps clearly and concisely SIGNED PROGRESS REPORT- 200 HW pts. √ or X your answers for full credit
3
Properties of Circles Central Angles: An angle that has its vertex at the center of a circle Sector of a circle is the region between two radii and an arc of a circle.
4
Term Definition Example Circle sector area conjecture The area of a sector of a circle is given by the formula, A is the area and r is the radius of the circle, and ‘a’ is the degree of the inscribed angle
5
Annulus is the area between two concentric (have the same center) circles
6
Geometric Probability outcome- a possible result event- a set of desired outcomes probability- the chance that something will happen, expressed as a decimal, fraction or % Probability = ----------------------------------- # of desired outcomes total # of outcomes possible
7
Geometric Probability pg. 458 The Shape of Things Right on Target Work with your group to do the investigation, steps 1 - 9. Each student must submit a write up clearly showing their work for each step. Be prepared to share your results for step 4 and step 8 with the class. Be ready to justify your answer.

Area formulas: Regular Polygons Circles

so what??? A small pizza has an 10 inch diameter. A medium with the same toppings has a 14 inch diameter. Predict how much more pizza you get when ordering a medium. Calculate the area for each pizza. How much more pizza do you get with the 14”? Give your answer in square inches and as a %. If the small costs $9.99 and the medium costs $12.99, which is the better deal?

Handout Do # 1- 6 go over answers Work with your group to complete 9, 10, 11
