Training Considerations SHICK & SMP Limited Trainers, Time, and Resources For SMP no way to train individuals from all over the state SHICK reviewed the SMP Foundations Training Materials, Ch-2, Liked it! We combined resources and curriculum and out came a training process called SHICK-SMP University.

3. Objectives Meet CMS & AoA training guidelines – Reduced staff & budget Improve consistency of training Improve competency of counselors & volunteers Provide flexible training options Develop greater depth of volunteer skills across the state

4. Current Requirements (These WILL Continue…) Rookie Counselors must complete 24 hours to be SHICK-certified Veteran Counselors must complete 12 hours of Update to remain certified Coordinators will recruit Coordinators will publicize local training dates/locations Coordinators will process volunteer apps Coordinators will complete pre-training interviews

5. NEW Requirements (Beginning this year…) Training days are split up – Trainees will only have to attend on day in any given week New options only require one day of training – associate certificate – NOT fully-certified SHICK/ SMP Office in Topeka will arrange for training space & take reservations

6. MORE NEW Requirements (SHICK Only) ALL Fully-certified counselors (including Rookies) will be required to complete 12 hours of Update training – 8 hours Face-2-Face Day 3 on Schedule – 4 hours by Webinar or Conference Call in Fall Include late-breaking info related to Part D & other counseling issues – Rookie Counselors will end up with 28 hours in year one – Associate Counselors will not be required to complete Update training

7. MORE Requirements (SMP Only) SMP Volunteers must complete a SMP Volunteer Application prior to training Complete Tracks 8 &9 (Ch. 2 & 3) 8 Hrs. Sign a Volunteer Agreement Complete 4 hrs. Annual Update Training

8. Getting Started Determine what level of certificate you would like to achieve. Look carefully at the track descriptions. – Consider whether or not the certificate has a prerequisite. You are not required to take all the courses in one week’s time. (or even in one year’s time) – Take the courses as best fits into your personal schedule, – Be sure to follow the reservation process as outlined at the end of this document. These sessions are being offered in multiple locations across the state, as well as some of the sessions will be offered in Webinar & Online Module formats.

Masters Certificate in Medicare Designed for experienced Counselors – Who want to know more & do more difficult counseling 5 days – Track 4 -Advanced A & B with Casework – Track 5 -Advanced C & D with Casework – Track 6 -Coordination of Benefits & Other Insurance – Track 7 -Low-Income Subsidy (LIS), Medicaid & Other Assistance – Track 3 -Annual Update Training

13. Associate Certificate in Medicare C & D with Computer Lab Designed for the Counselor who only assists beneficiaries during the AEP (Annual Election Period) 1 day – Track 2 –Medicare C & D w/computer lab

14. Associate Certificate in SMP Designed for the individual who wants to be an SMP Counselor, only. 1 day – Track 8 -Medicare Cliff Notes (A,B,C,D) – Track 9 -KS-SMP Training Detecting – Fraud – Abuse – Misuse – Scams – Identity theft – reporting process
