Changes The Creators of the Constitution realized that changes would eventually have to be made. “Changes” and “Additions” are referred to as AMENDMENTS First 10 amendments are referred to as the Bill of Rights Adding the bill of rights was necessary to get the support of Anti- Federalists The Constitution has 27 Amendments and is the oldest Constitution in the world at 226 years old 27 th Amendment took 203 years to pass!

The Amendments The First 10 Amendments are commonly known as the Bill of Rights were all ratified(passed) in 1791… 2 years after the constitution was ratified. Amendment 1 - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression Amendment 2 - Right to Bear Arms by a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State Amendment 3 - No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner

Amendments Continued Amendment 4 - The right of the people against unreasonable searches and seizures Amendment 5 - No person shall be subject for the exact same offense 2X nor shall be forced in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, Amendment 6 - the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury

Amendments Continued Amendment 7 - Trial by Jury in Civil Cases, where the value in controversy exceeds twenty dollars, Amendment 8 - Prohibits Cruel and Unusual Punishment Amendment 9- No law shall be created that takes away the rights of a citizen Amendment 10- The powers not given to the Federal Gov by the Constitution, are reserved to the states.

Other Important Amendments Amendments 13-15 Dealt with slavery/slave rights after the Civil War. Amendment 13 - Slavery Abolished. Ratified 1865 Amendment 14 - Citizenship Rights- All persons born in the United States, are citizens of the United States Ratified 1868 Amendment 15 - No denial to vote based on race. Ratified 1870

Other Important Amendments Amendment 16- The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, Ratified 1913. Amendment 18 - Liquor Abolished. Ratified 1/16/1919. 18 was Repealed by Amendment 21 in 1933. Amendment 19 - Women's right to vote. Ratified 1920 Amendment 26 - Voting Age Set to 18 Years. Ratified 1971.
