What do I need $2-3K for? food first month's rent and utilities travel (to explore Tokyo, your prefecture, etc.) buying and setting up a cell phone setting up a bank account buying/leasing a car household goods toiletries random fun stuff...

Where should I change my money? 1. your bank (you need to talk to them anyway) 2. US Airport 3. Tokyo Narita Airport 4. Keio Plaza Hotel during Orientation There's a good chance you won't have the opportunity to exchange U.S. Dollars for yen, so take advantage of airports and Tokyo while you can.
