5 Semester at a Glance Events & DatesEvent Description Notes or References (Professional Semester Handbook) January 5 8:30-4:00 pm High Impact Strategies, CAIU All teacher candidates participate in High Impact Strategies Professional Development January 21 6:00-8:00 PM Boyer 131 Pairs Workshop The focus of this evening is to provide the cooperating teacher and teacher candidate time to become familiar with one another and learn professional semester requirements. February 1 First Day of Field Placement pg. 5, Overview of Professional Semester College Supervisor Initial Visit (Within the first two weeks) Supervisors will observe the teacher candidate interacting in the school and address questions the co-op may have. Initial Visitation Form, completed by college supervisor 2/1-3/18 Field Placement #1 (if applicable) Teacher candidates will gradually take the lead in planning, instruction, classroom management, and related teaching responsibilities. Cooperating teacher completes performance observation form at least once per week with the goal of turning in 10 at the end of the semester (5 per placement for those with two assignments). College Supervisor conducts 5 live observations by end of semester Video 1 and self-reflection must be completed one week prior to mid-term evaluation (MARCH 11). Mid-Term Evaluation Period March 11-21 Formative evaluations done collaboratively in a three-way conference, including the teacher candidate, co-op, and the Messiah College supervisor. This will serve to monitor progress and to set goals for the second half of the student teaching experience. pg. 41 -College supervisor and cooperating teacher complete Messiah College Midterm Evaluation Form. Forms signed electronically by all three participants to complete process. -Messiah College supervisor completes PDE 430. Form signed by Messiah College supervisor and student. *Due for TEP Office review by 3/21 Note: HPE, Art, Dual Certification (PreK-4/Special Education) may change placements at this time. Acclimation time is expected to acquaint the teacher candidate with the new school setting.

6 If Applicable: March 21 (3/21-5/5 or 5/6) First Day of Field Placement #2 Field Placement #2 pg. 5, Overview of Professional Semester Video 2 and self-reflection must be completed one week prior to final evaluation (APRIL 29). Final Evaluation Period April 29-May 9 Electronic Messiah College Final Evaluation Form completed by the co-op and Messiah College Supervisor. The MC Supervisor and the teacher candidate will conference. -Messiah College supervisor and second cooperating teacher collaboratively complete Messiah College Final Evaluation Form. Form signed electronically by all three participants to complete process. -Messiah College supervisor completes PDE 430. Form signed by Messiah College supervisor and student. *Due for TEP Office review by 5/9 May 5 (5/6 for Art and Music) Last day of Student Teaching Portfolio Fair May 6 (not Art and Music) Presentation Portfolio Review 8:30-11:00 a.m., Howe Atrium Mandatory attendance on this morning for all teacher candidates except Art & Music. 7 Background for the Professional Semester Students have completed at least two school-based field experiences prior to student teaching. Students have completed all of the coursework in the Professional Core. Students are completing complementary assignments in a Professional Issues course and in some majors a content pedagogy and/or seminar course.

10 Guidelines for Live Performance Observations Ideally, the college supervisor/cooperating teacher is observing the student teacher doing at least some whole group instruction. The dates of the live observations may or may not be announced to the student teacher. Soon after the live observation the college supervisor/ cooperating teacher will conference with the student and review the observation form. Hard copy of the student teacher’s written instructional plan must be available for the college supervisor to review at the time of the observation.

11 Guidelines for Video Student Self-Monitoring Assignment Students will video record their teaching twice during the semester. Video assignment downloading directions on Canvas Video assignment Instruction may be of large or small group instruction. Both videos and self-reflections must be uploaded to Canvas. Phases 1 of this assignment must be completed prior to the mid-term conference. Phase 2 must be completed at least 1 week before the experience ends. The college supervisor will be able to view the videos by going into the Canvas site in the assignment folder. Do NOT post these videos on any public site such as YouTube or Facebook.

12 Student Planning Expectations Clear, systematic instructional planning is a critical element of Messiah College’s Teacher Education Program. Written plans are to follow the Messiah College Planning Model (As taught in Instructional Design, Art,HPE, or Music Curriculum & Unit Instruction courses.)Messiah College Planning Model The cooperating teacher may provide preliminary plans, teaching materials, curriculum documents, or other relevant resources to assist the student in effective planning. The student teacher is to submit plans to the cooperating teacher 48 hours in advance of teaching. If the plans are not submitted in a timely manner or are not satisfactory by the time the student is to teach, the cooperating teacher may not allow the student teacher to teach.

13 Weekly Goal and Reflection Assignment 0 Articulate one goal in each of Danielson’s four domains: 0 Instructional Planning and Preparation 0 Classroom Environment 0 Instructional Delivery 0 Professionalism 0 These goals may be the outcomes you focus on in your career. 0 Each week you will articulate how you have worked toward the goal and the progress you’ve made. Goal/Reflection FormGoal/Reflection Form 0 Supervisors support in refining of goals. 0 Collect evidence to support your action and growth. 0 Goals can be revised if needed throughout the semester.

14 Final Evaluation The Messiah College Final Evaluation Form is to be completed and signed electronically by the college supervisor with input from the cooperating teacher. The PDE 430 Form is to be completed by the college supervisor. The college supervisor will conference with the student teacher to explain the final evaluations and remind the student of the need for electronic signature. Both final evaluation forms are to be submitted by the college supervisors to the Teacher Education Program Office via MCSquare at the end of the semester. The evaluation forms are automatically submitted to the Field Experience Office once all parties have provided electronic signatures. Both final evaluation forms will be available to the student in MCSquare after TEP Office review at the end of the semester.

15 Guidelines for School Attendance Students should follow the school district calendar including attending teacher in-service events. Student teachers should arrive no later than when teachers are required to arrive and stay at least until teachers are allowed to leave at the end of the day. Be actively engaged in classroom activities throughout the semester.

16 Attendance Expectations 0 Student teachers are expected to be in their assigned school/classroom every day that their school/district is in session once they begin full-time student teaching. (in-service or Act 80 days, parent-teacher conference times, open houses, etc. are included) 0 Make-up days will be assigned for absences. 0 Student teachers MAY plan to miss school one day for an approved professional event/activity. 0 Students will find the absence report forms on MCSquare under their Self-Service TEP tab. (college supervisors and cooperating teachers will receive notification)

25 Introducing the student teacher 0 The goal is to have the students recognize the student teacher as an adult, professional, authority figure in the classroom. This is a teacher candidate completing his/her culminating internship experience. 0 Consider how you will introduce student teacher to the following audiences: students, parents, administrators, other teachers, staff in the school. 0 What personal information will the student teacher share with these audiences and in what format?
