20 Classifying Angles Essential Understanding: An angle is a figure formed by two rays that share an end point, known as a vertex. Angles are classified by their measurement. They are measured by using a tool called a protractor, and are described using degrees. Acute Angles, are angles that measure more than 0 o but less than 90 o Examples: Right Angles, are angles that measure exactly 90 o. This is the most common type of angle. You can think of a right angle as ¼ of a circle (360 o divided by 4 = 90 o ). 53 Calculating Missing Angles Essential Understanding: Triangles are made up of three angles and three lines. The sum of all three angles is always 180 o. It is simple to find the measure of an unknown angle, when two angles are given. Simply subtract the sum of the two know angles from 180 o. Examples: To find the measure of an unknown angle when the other angles are not given can be a bit trickier. To do this you must rely on your knowledge of angle relationships and their classifications (i.e. vertical angles, complementary angles, supplementary angles, scalene triangle, isosceles triangles, and equilateral triangles.)
