6. Act V Notes: Scene 1 p. 266-268 Romeo has a dream that he died (foreshadowing), that Juliet came and kissed him, and he came back to life as an emperor. Balthasar tells Romeo that he saw Juliet’s funeral and she is dead. Romeo decides to commit suicide, so he remembers an old and poor apothecary who lives in Mantua. Romeo persuades the apothecary to sell him poison, even though it is illegal on penalty of death to do so in Mantua. The poison is strong enough to kill 20 men. Romeo gives the apothecary all the money he has (jackpot for the poor apothecary) Scene 2 p. 268-269 Friar John is unable to deliver the message to Romeo because he is suspected and his guide by authorities in Mantua of having been in contact with victims of the plague; they’re placed in quarantine until they can prove otherwise. Friar Laurence realizes that Juliet is to wake up within the next 3 hours and he must be there for her. Scene 3 part 1 p. 269-272 lines 1-120 Paris comes with his page to visit Juliet’s tomb and tells his page to whistle as a warning that someone is approaching. Once inside with Juliet, Paris vows to come daily and sprinkle Juliet’s body with sweet water (perfume) or his tears. He truly loved her. Paris hears his page’s whistle. Romeo and Balthasar are approaching. Romeo gives Balthasar a letter (suicide) to give to his father and warns Balthasar to leave immediately. Romeo warns that if Balthasar does not obey, he will kill him. Balthasar suspects something is off and hides instead. Paris assumes that Romeo is there to do damage to Tybalt’s and Juliet’s bodies, so he attempts to arrest Romeo. Romeo argues with Paris and tells him that he (Romeo) is there to do harm to himself, but Paris insists on arresting him. The two fight and Romeo kills Paris. Paris asks Romeo (his last wish) to place his body next to Juliet’s and Romeo grants it.

7. In his final soliloquy, Romeo observes that Juliet does not look dead (duh). He says his last farewell, takes the poison (works perfectly) and dies next to Juliet. Scene 3 part 2 p. 272-275 lines 121-187 Friar Laurence and Balthasar run into each other. Romeo has been inside the Capulet monument for 30 minutes. Balthasar thinks he dreamt that Romeo fought a man and killed him. Not a dream, but he actually witnessed the fight between Romeo and Paris. Friar Laurence sees Romeo dead just as Juliet begins to wake up. When he hears a noise outside, he gets scared and rushes to tell Juliet about Romeo. He comes up with a quick plan for Juliet – He will take her to a convent where she can live the rest of her life as a nun. Juliet refuses to go with the friar and he leaves her behind (wow!) Juliet realizes that Romeo poisoned himself, tries to drink leftover poison from his lips, none left, and stabs herself with Romeo’s dagger before the guards enter. (Yes! Romeo had a dagger all along.) The guards take Balthasar and Friar Laurence into custody as suspects/witnesses. Scene 3 part 3 p. 275-278 lines 188 to end Prince Escalus arrives and calls the Capulets and Montagues. Lord Montague announces that his wife also died overnight grieving over Romeo’s banishment. Friar Laurence summarizes the entire play in lines 229-269 as he is asked by the prince to tell what he knows. Romeo’s letter to his father corroborates the Friar’s account. Prince Escalus, who loses another relative (Paris) blames himself because he did not do enough to stop the feud. Capulet and Montague stop the feud and vow to build gold statues of the other’s child as a tribute to their love. The End!
