Today’s Do Now 10/17/2014 1. Write the formula for the following chemical compounds: Potassium Sulfide Lithium Sulfate 2. Draw the Lewis Structure for the following chemical compounds: Sodium Chloride Magnesium Oxide 3. Label the following compounds as either ionic or covalent: CO 2 Na 2 O
2
What if there is a Transition Metal?? The oxidation number of the transition metal will be written as a roman numeral in parentheses. Criss-Cross! Copper (II) chloride Copper (III) chloride
3
Example: Iron (III) Sulfide
4
Example: Manganese (IV) Fluoride
5
Write the formula for… Lead (II) Iodide
6
PbI 2
7
NAMING IONIC COMPOUNDS
8
By the end of the class period today I will be able to… Name Name ionic compounds when given a formula Example: Li 2 CO 3 is Lithium Carbonate
9
Naming Ionic Compounds There are two types of ionic compounds that form and the way we name them is slightly different: 1. Simple Ionic Compound 2. Ionic Compounds with Transition Metals
10
SIMPLE IONIC COMPOUNDS Compounds that are made up of a metal that forms only one type of cation and a nonmetal. Zn 2+ Ag +
11
Naming simple ionic compounds: 1. Write the name of the metal first. 2. Write the root name of the nonmetal. 3. Add the ending –ide to the root name of the nonmetal. Example: K 2 S potassium sulfide CaBr 2 calcium bromide
12
Naming simple ionic compounds (with polyatomic ions): 1.Follow the same rules as regular ionic compounds except use the name of the polyatomic ion rather than the individual elements Examples: NH 4 NO 3 ammonium nitrate SrCO 3 strontium carbonate
13
Group Practice Problems in sets of threes. Keep track of your points.
14
1 st Set…Name the Following Ionic Compounds 1. K 2 S 2. NaCl 3. BaBr 2
15
2 nd Set…Name the Following Ionic Compounds 4. MgS 5. Mg(NO 3 ) 2 6. AgNO 3
16
3 rd and Final Set…Name the Following Ionic Compounds 7. BaSO 4 8. ZnS 9. NaC 2 H 3 O 2
17
Why is this example different? Titanium (II) Sulfate TiSO 4
18
Naming ionic compounds containing transition metals: 1.Write the name of transition metal first. 2.Write the oxidation number of the transition metal using roman numerals in parentheses. 3.Write the root name of the nonmetal. 4.Add the ending –ide to the root name of the nonmetal. EXCEPTIONS: Silver (Ag) always has a +1 charge Zinc (Zn) always has a +2 charge
19
Let’s do some examples: CuCl 2 Cu 2 O Pb(SO 4 ) 2
