Autonomous cars D202, GROUP 4 ROCKY HE, RICHARD WONG, STUART PIERCE
2
What are autonomous cars? Self-driving cars Advanced technology implemented in them Humans no longer need to drive
3
Technology Surrounding Autonomy Technology consists of pre-existing innovations such as: 360 degree sensors GPS Cruise Control Ease public safety concerns Can be applied to other vehicles
4
Five Stages of Implementation Stage 0 Driver is in complete control of vehicle Stage 1 Specific vehicle controls are automated (ex. Braking or signaling) Stage 2 Two types of controls applied simultaneously (ex. Cruise control and breaking) Stage 3 Driver can give up full control of all safety functions, vehicle requires driver to take control when necessary Stage 4 Vehicle performs all safety functions, driver isn’t expected to control vehicle at any time
5
Implementation Public has access to level 2 Companies have permission to begin testing of level 3 Only legal in some states
6
Where We Are Today Implications of autonomy Issues surrounding implementation Managing these systems
7
Google chauffeur Googles software designed for existing cars that gives them the ability to be self-driving How it works: Cameras and Lidar Sensor Google Chauffer analyzes data Gives commands to the car
8
Ford’s R&D Lab Fords 3 rd R&D Lab Located in Silicon Valley Its focus is: Virtual testing Researching autonomous car technology Mass production immediately following research
9
Mercedes-Benz F 015 First autonomous concept car by Mercedes-Benz Luxury 4 passenger sedan 6 touchscreen displays Rotating chairs
10
Benefits of Autonomous Cars Increase in road safety Autonomous cars eliminate distracted drivers In 2010, 104 fatalities in B.C. attributed to distracted driving Time spent driving can be used for more productive activities 11.4 million Canadians spend an average of 23.7 minutes commuting daily Equates to approximately 4.5 million hours spent commuting daily
11
Benefits of Autonomous Cars Cont. Reduced traffic and congestion Removal of driving constraints and limitations for certain occupants Reduction of energy and fuel consumption Eliminates impaired driving
12
Disadvantages of Autonomous Cars Loss of jobs Taxi drivers Truck drivers Liability issues in the result of a crash Insurance companies would need to overhaul their policies
13
What the Future Holds It is clear automotive companies are pushing for driver-less cars The potential benefits for consumers are large Revolutionize the auto industry Change the way people commute
