Modern Mobile Technologies By: Vincent Verner

Overview Mobile hardware Generation speed standards How mobile networks work Current mobile security measures Future of mobile technology

How It Works Electromagnetic Waves-Both mobile phones and their base station towers transmit and receive data information using electromagnetic waves. Base station- link mobile phones to the rest of the mobile and fixed phone network

Zero Generation Networks 0G Mobile radio telephone systems that became available in the 1970s Preceded modern cellular mobile technology. Usually transmitters mounted in cars or trucks

First Generation standard (1980's): 1G mobile phone networks were the earliest cellular systems to be developed. Used an analogue signal for voice calls only.

Second Generation Standard(1990's) 2G mobile networks was the first mobile phone system that used purely digital technology. Introduced data services for mobile devices starting with SMS text messages. New digital systems emit less radio power from the handsets.

Third Generation Standard (2001): Third Generation mobile telephone networks support much higher data transmission rates and offer increased capacity, which makes them suitable for high-speed data applications as well as for the traditional voice calls. 3G systems are designed to process data, with voice signals being treated as any other form of data. Third Generation systems implement packet- switching technology that is more efficient and faster than the traditional circuit-switched systems, www.pbs.org/opb/nerds2.0.1/geek_glossary/packet_ switching_flash.html www.pbs.org/opb/nerds2.0.1/geek_glossary/packet_ switching_flash.html

Third Generation Standard (Continued) 3G phones provided: Internet access Multimedia applications, TV streaming, Multimedia, Videoconferencing, E-mail, Navigational maps.

Fourth Generation Standard (2010): Fastest wireless mobile network that today’s smart phones use. Coverage is still limited outside some major cities. 4G networks provide connection speeds of about 3 to 5 Mbps -- as fast as wired DSL and cable; with a competitive price to current 3G plans. http://www.linkedandloaded.com/2011/06/12/from-1g- to-4g-cell-phones-making-moves/

3G & 4G Security Dilemma Hardware aspect Smart phones mimicking personal computers. Tablets with built in 3G & 4G modems Netbook with built in 3G & 4G modems Software aspect Open source vs. closed source http://www.pcworld.com/article/248844/hackers_r ide_radio_waves_to_hack_smartphones.html

Attack Methods Ransomware - an infection that takes control of a system until a ransom payment has been delivered Worms - poisoned SMS messages containing links to rogue applications, or through infected links on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Polymorphic malware – applications that infect your device & are extremely difficult to detect & destroy

Methods of defense Downloading smart phone antivirus software Be wary of suspicious SMS links & email Don’t download apps from un-trusted sources

Future of Mobile Technology Faster speeds in smaller devices Internet speeds & tethering options that rival desktop browsing speeds Advanced pc connectivity & possible replacement.
