CONCEPT DIAGRAMS APPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY
2
CONCEPT DIAGRAM Architecture begins with an idea. Good solutions are not merely physically interesting but are drive by underlying ideas. Concept sketches allow architects organize, understand, and give meaning to external information and experiences.
3
CONCEPT DIAGRAM A concept diagram or parti is the central idea(s) of a building. The parti is often expressed by a diagram depicting the general floor plan of a building. Parti/concept sketches can also represent ideas in section and/or elevation.
4
CONCEPT DIAGRAM A concept diagram may be related to the following:
Massing Entrance Spatial Hierarchy Site Relationships Core Location Interior Circulation Public/Private Zoning Solid/Transparency
5
CONCEPT DIAGRAM What have you learned in this class (earlier in the year) that would help you create a concept for your project? Elements of Design Line Shape/Form Space Color Texture Principles of Design Transformation Axis Balance Unity Rhythm Hierarchy
6
Spatial Organizations/Circulation
There are five basic ways to arrange the spaces in a building that ultimately influence the shape and form as well as the circulation patterns within a building. Centralized Linear Radial Clustered Grid
7
Centralized Organizations
Secondary spaces are grouped around a central, dominant space. What is the most prominent principle of design is used in centralized organizations? Hierarchy. The central dominant space is often a different shape or size compared to the secondary spaces. National Assembly Building , Louis Kahn Bangladesh
8
Linear Organizations A series of spaces organized along an axis/path.
Longhouse Iroquois Tribe dwelling
9
Linear Organizations Spaces may be repetitive but may or may not be alike in size, form, or function. The path does not have to be a straight line. Bake House Alvar Aalto Cambridge, Massachusettes
10
Radial Organizations A dominant central space with paths extending in a radial manner. Centralized Organizations have an inward focus while Radial Organizations have linear arms with an outward focus. Centralized Radial
11
Radial Organizations The central space is normally a regular shape.
UNESCO Headquarters, Marcel Breuer Paris, France
12
Clustered Organizations
Rely on physical proximity to relate its spaces together. They often include repetitive spaces that may or may not be similar in function, shape, or orientation. These spaces may be related by axis and symmetry. They may also be grouped around an entry point or along a path.
13
Clustered Organizations
Falling Water Frank Lloyd Wright Mill Run, Pennsylvania Clustered patterns do not have to originate from a rigid geometric concept. They are flexible, accepting growth and allowing change readily without affecting the organizations character.
14
Grid Organizations Spaces organized within the field of a structural grid or other three- dimensional framework. Grids create regularity and establish a stable set or field of reference points. Grids may be transformed (adding, subtracting, layering). A portion of a grid may also be dislocated and rotated about a point.
15
Grid Organizations A grid can be made irregular in one or two directions to articulate zones for circulation and service or to accommodate dimensional requirements of its spaces. Grid patterns may be interrupted to define a major space. Classification of Temples, Vitruvius

CONCEPT DIAGRAM The following are examples of Concept Diagrams
The core of a building contains vertical circulation (elevators and stairs) and mechanical systems.
18
CONCEPT DIAGRAM Missing spoke concept could represent the idea of a loss inviting an opportunity. What principle(s) of design is being used in this concept? What type of spatial organization is this? Centralized Balance (radial symmetry), Axis, Rhythm and Repetition, Unity
19
CONCEPT DIAGRAM Finger poking into the woods might be derived by the idea of the relationship between field and forest. What principle(s) of design is being used in this concept? Hierarchy is being used in this concept due to the placement and shape of one of the spaces. What type of spatial organization is this? Linear Rhythym and Repetition, Hierarchy (size, shape, position)
20
CONCEPT DIAGRAM L’s in conflict might be an idea for a new government building for two factions, previously at war, that have come together to form a new nation. What type of spatial organization is this? Centralized What principle(s) of design is being used in this concept? Transformation (colliding geometry)
21
CONCEPT DIAGRAM The following are examples of Concept Sketches
The third allows for the best flow of traffic. It is easy to have a conversation or watch tv without people walk through and interrupting. Which arrangement of rooms allows for the best flow of traffic?
22
EXIT TICKET What principles and elements of design are used in this building? List at least two for each and describe in complete sentences how they are used in this building. What type of spatial organization was used in this building?
