Environmental Impacts

Deforestation- Worldwide consumption of paper has risen by 400% in the past 40 years, with 35% of harvested trees being used for paper manufacture. The logging of old growth forests raises ethical questions about cutting down trees that are hundreds of years to make paper pulp. However of even greater concern is that many natural habitats such as old growth forests act as carbon sinks that collect some of the excess Carbon Dioxide (CO2) that is being released into the atmosphere, which can be considered to be a very valuable ecosystem service. Waste- Paper waste accounts for up to 40% of total waste in the United States, which adds up to 71.6 million tons of waste per year. Paper waste, like other waste, carries the risk of additional hazards such as toxic inks and dyes that could be potentially carcinogenic when incinerated and can contaminate local and foreign ground water. Pollution - Water and Air Pollution is caused by Nitrogen Dioxide in paper, which is one of the major contributors to acid rain. Also the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in paper is a greenhouse gas, which is a factor in climate change. Recycling - As discussed earlier paper recycling mitigates some of these impacts, but the environmental and economic impacts of the energy consumed by manufacturing, transporting and reprocessing paper products is still very high. Thus people and business should not only focus on recycling when paper is used, but put more interest and resources in eliminating paper in the workplace as much as possible Environmental Impact-
