3. Objective This training provides an overview of the SAS Enterprise Business Intelligence (SAS/EBI) software at CMS. You will learn about the applications, key features, access, and data sources within the tool suite. The information in this training is specific to the implementation of this tool at CMS. 3

4. SAS/EBI Platform The SAS/EBI platform is a multi-tier environment: Client Tier – Includes SAS applications that will be installed on the user’s desktop. Web Tier – Contains Web applications that the user can execute. Server Tier – Includes SAS servers, such as Metadata, workspace, stored process, and OLAP, which are already installed and can be accessed by the user. Data Tier – Contains enterprise data sources for a variety of data formats. Metadata – Includes the Metadata Server and repositories for managing information in the server environment. 4

6. Data Sources SAS/EBI can interface to a multitude of data resources needed for effective information delivery, allowing resources to work in a dynamic, syntax-free environment. Out-of-the- box solutions provide the power and flexibility needed for SAS/EBI to analyze and present data directly from a database. 6

7. SAS/EBI User Profiles at CMS Access to the SAS/EBI environments can take two to three weeks after your Enterprise User Administration access codes have been approved. Web-only users require less time. Listed below are the SAS/EBI user profiles for each profile. SAS BI user profiles are still being fine-tuned to suit CMS user needs. 7 User ProfileDescription Standard User (Web only) Allows access to SAS EBI web applications in the SAS EBI Production environment. Power UserAllows access to SAS EBI web and desktop client applications in the SAS EBI Production environment. ModelerAllows access to SAS EBI web and desktop client applications in the SAS EBI Production predictive modeling environment. DeveloperAllows access to SAS EBI web and desktop client applications in the SAS EBI Development environment.

8. SAS/EBI Information Maps Acts as a semantic layer built on top of the Medicare Virtual Data Mart. Built by the development team; used by the end user community. Designed by functionality and subject area. Integrates across the SAS Enterprise suite of products. Includes a drag-and-drop graphical user interface. Provides consistent naming standards for folders, objects, and attributes with the Integrated Data Repository ( IDR) data dictionary. 8

9. Information Maps - Features Generates join conditions, data summarizations, and query code against the IDR. Provides security and guard rails. Allows targeted view of data. Allows use of data filters. Allows for ‘in database processing’ and data summarization at the appropriate levels, based on the requirements (e.g., state-level summarized data). Reduces report building and analysis time. Supports a wide range of users. Ignoring SASBI best practices when accessing the IDR could lead to serious performance issues. 9

11. What is the Part D Information Map? Accesses Medicare Part D claims information only. Thirty-seven commonly used Part D data elements. Data elements grouped by business area, such as Provider, Beneficiary, Geographic, and Drugs. Pre-defined filters, such as Final Action, Claim Type, and Date Ranges. Aggregates and metrics, such as Total Drug Cost, Distinct Beneficiary Count, and Count of PDEs. 11

12. WRS Job Scheduling Job scheduling automates the delivery of updated content to report users. Reporting criteria can define: Run interval. Number of archival executions to retain. Background scheduling during non-peak hours. Scheduling of stored processes for execution in the background. Not following standard practices and protocols when cancelling scheduled jobs and interactive report runs can lead to server downtime. 12

WRS Job Scheduling Scenarios Performance improvement via report caching Change Type = “Data is automatically refreshed” to Type = “Data can be manually refreshed” in the 'Save As' screen to allow users to view a static/cached version of the report updated during the last scheduled run. Archiving reports for auditing or review purposes If historical output is needed, set up the archival option by selecting the “Retain previous instances of output not to exceed” checkbox on the scheduling screen and enter the number of historical files to store. The Scheduler is native to the SAS BI tool and is independent of CMS enterprise scheduling tools. 13

14. Using SAS OLAP Cubes for Reporting An OLAP cube is a data container that holds pre- summarized data in a multi-dimensional form. Browsing Data in an OLAP Cube Pre-summarized/pre-aggregated data in a SAS OLAP Cube provides instant answers to business questions. 15 What is the total claim paid amount for claimtypecode ‘1’ (Part D Original without Resubmission) for Feb. 2011? OLAP Cube allows users to drill up and down to view data at different levels: 2011 > QTR1 > Feb.

16. Creating an EG Report Connect to the administrative virtual private network (VPN) band. Set up a connection profile (SAS/EBI clients). Open an Information Map in EG. Report examples: – Analyze PDE events for a specific time period. – PDE count. – Number of distinct beneficiaries. 16
