Choose a novel or story in which cultural, physical, or geographical surroundings shape psychological or moral traits in a character. Then write a well-organized essay in which you analyze how the setting affects this character and illuminates the meaning of the work as a whole. Structure Reminders Introduction: Hook the reader’s interest, explain the hook, give a brief summary of the story you are going to analyze, state your answer to the prompt using a three-point thesis. Body: Write three body paragraphs, include a topic sentence, supporting examples, your explanation of the context for each example and how it supports the thesis, and a closing sentence. Conclusion: Restate the thesis, summarize your important points, provide closure, give the reader something to think about.

CLOSE READING / TEXT ANNOTATION: FRANKENSTEIN MARY SHELLEY MARY SHELLEY: Wrote the original story when she was 17 years old. She and her husband were trapped in a storm with friends and they held a horror story contest. She won. THE SCIENCE THE SCIENCE: Galvanism Why would someone want to do this? FRANKENSTEIN is considered to be one of the first science fiction stories because it is based on what was considered to be real science at the time: Galvanism. This is the reanimation of dead tissue using electricity. Why would someone want to do this? Is this “playing God”? THE STORY THE STORY: FRANKENSTEIN is the story of a young scientist who is distraught over the loss of his mother and becomes obsessed with bringing the dead back to life. He achieves his goal but rejects his creation as well as a line he believed he crossed. When his creation is hurt by the rejection of his “father”, he goes on a murderous rampage.

He is conflicted about his feelings for his friend Caesar. He is dangerous, predatory, and crafty. CASSIUS CAESAR: CAESAR: Let me have men about me that are fat, sleek-headed men, and such as sleep o’ nights. Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look; he thinks too much, such men area dangerous. (Shakespeare 1210 lines 192-195).
