6. CLOSE READING / TEXT ANNOTATION: FRANKENSTEIN MARY SHELLEY MARY SHELLEY: Wrote the original story when she was 17 years old. She and her husband were trapped in a storm with friends and they held a horror story contest. She won. THE SCIENCE THE SCIENCE: Galvanism Why would someone want to do this? FRANKENSTEIN is considered to be one of the first science fiction stories because it is based on what was considered to be real science at the time: Galvanism. This is the reanimation of dead tissue using electricity. Why would someone want to do this? Is this “playing God”? THE STORY THE STORY: FRANKENSTEIN is the story of a young scientist who is distraught over the loss of his mother and becomes obsessed with bringing the dead back to life. He achieves his goal but rejects his creation as well as a line he believed he crossed. When his creation is hurt by the rejection of his “father”, he goes on a murderous rampage.
