Head of Ottoman empire Controlled the government and military As empire expanded, they became more isolated from their people Hereditary position (went to a son) Lived in a harem (sacred, private domain) Grand vizier led the imperial council meetings & took directions from the sultan Pashas governed the districts within the empire Collected Taxes, maintained law & order Imperial Sultans

Most were Sunni (a sect of Islam) Sultan = caliph Gave religious duties to ulema (administered Islamic law and religious schools) Very tolerant of non-Muslims (convert or pay tax and worship as you want) Women had more rights than in most other countries Inherit property Could not be forced into marriage Could get divorced Life in Ottoman Society
