5 Preparation for Entry into employment or Tertiary/Mainstream study  Certificate Entry in EAL (Access)  Certificate I in EAL (Access)  Certificates II in EAL (Access)  Certificate II in EAL (employment)  Certificate III in EAL (Access)  Certificate III in EAL (employment)  Certificate III in EAL (Further study)  Certificate IV in EAL ENGLISH as an ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE (EAL) Program

6 EAL Program  All language learning is focused on current, everyday topics and issues  Transitional  EAL students are supported by specialist VET educators in a group setting and on an individual basis.  The program is taught by EAL teachers who are well-versed in developing and delivering EAL-focussed programs and who are experienced in working with migrants and refugees.  VET Elective units provide opportunities for a smooth and supported transition into the TAFE study environment  Numeracy and computer skills are tailored to suit the competence level of each student  Electives may also be chosen from any endorsed training packages  Practical Placement  Work observations

7 Employability Skills A set of key competencies and employability skills are embedded in each course study area. These include the generic skills Communication Teamwork Problem-solving Planning and organising Self management Technology Life-long learning Initiative and enterprise

9 There is an opportunity for recognition of previous study, knowledge and skills resulting from work or life experience relevant to the course. Applicants must show evidence of prior qualification or experience in a related field. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

11 Pathways of current students who just completed study in the EAL programs (Certificate III in ESL) this year 2013  2 students are enrolling in VCE  4 students are enrolling in Certificate III in Business  3 students are enrolling in Certificate II in I.T  3 students are enrolling in Certificate II in engineering/ESL  1 student in an Accounting degree  5 students IV ESL  6 students enrolled in Certificate II in Automotive Current student pathways June 2013....

12  Student X was born in Somalia in 1991.  Migrated to Australia as a refugee in 2010. After attending secondary college and not coping with her studies she began in the Youth program last year. However she dropped out of the course due to personal issues.  Returned to TAFE this year, joined the YOUTH program again and despite dealing with homelessness, personal family problems, anger management issues she worked hard sometimes to just get to class and managed to complete her studies and focus on planning a study pathway for next semester.  Throughout her course she was keen to learn and appreciative of her opportunities and committed to doing her best in class and on her Practical Placement. In visiting Student X on her work placement, what was most evident was her confidence and the great rapport that she built with other staff. She did so well in her placement that she was told to submit her resume in for possible part-time work.  Student X was totally disengaged and was dealing with a lot of personal issues. The supportive environment in the EAL YOUTH program enabled her to find her way again and focus on achieving her personal goals. Student X is currently enrolled in Certificate II in Business Studies. A personal journey.......
