Biomedical Sciences Careers: Lab Technicians X-Ray Technicians Phlebotomists Medical Examiners Doctors/Surgeons Nurses
4
What do we do in Biomedical Science? Research Labs/Dissections Group Projects Build a Maniken®

6
What do we do in Engineering? 3D printing Build everything! Houses/Bridges Electronics and Robots Windmills and solar cars Water filtration Puzzle cubes

Student Experience Real world problems explored, making class relevant and increasing problems solving skills Group work is done constantly, and leaders are born. Leadership skills are ranked high as a need from employers, making PLTW students more attractive to employers and colleges. PLTW students at Westy work with actual companies and colleges during their projects and internships. Just a few of these are: Independent Power Systems, Colorado School of Mines, North Suburban Medical Center, Regis University, University of Colorado-Boulder, Lockheed Martin, Anschutz Medical Campus. Approximately half our freshmen class enrolled in a PLTW classes this year! 71 students signed up for and received college credit last year. 75% of the students claimed that PLTW helped with their math skills. 90% of students claimed that PLTW helped them with their science skills. 90% of students claimed that PLTW helped them with their attendance in all classes. 95% of students claimed that PLTW inspired them to go to college. “Among other significant findings, independent research studies reveal that PLTW students outperform their peers in school, are better prepared for post-secondary studies, and are more likely to consider careers as scientists, technology experts, engineers, mathematicians, healthcare providers, and researchers compared to their non-PLTW peers.” (pltw.org)
8
Class you will sign up for in 9 th grade: Engineering: – Introduction to Engineering Design Biomedical – Principles of Biomedical Sciences They get you college credit, so try to do both!
9
After 9 th grade: Engineering: – Principles of Engineering – Civil Engineering and Architecture – Digital Electronics – Engineering Design and Development Design whatever you want in this class! MUST take other engineering classes before taking this one, so get started early! Biomedical: – Human Body Systems – Medical Interventions – Biomedical Innovations

The number of PLTW classes at Westy is UNUSUAL! Most High Schools in our area do not have PLTW at all Those that do have PLTW, do not have both sides of PLTW or as many offerings! Not every school has the CERTIFICATION necessary for college credit, but WE DO.
11
College Credit available! Why Now? Certification! Not many schools in the metro area are certified! Will anything change? No, your student will stay with the same teacher they have and do the same activities as everyone else! Why we recommend paying for the college credit: actual credit from a well known college- UCCS What is the credit and how will it transfer if needed? (see next slide)

Engineering Introduction to Engineering Design2 Credits Principles of Engineering3 Credits Digital Electronics2 Credits Engineering Design and Development3 Credits Civil Engineering and Architecture3 Credits Biomedical Sciences Principles of Biomedical Sciences3 Credits Human Body Systems3 Credits Medical Interventions 3 Credits Biomedical Innovations3 Credits You can earn 25 credits just by doing PLTW classes. This will make you eligible for the ASCENT program!

Cost and Process UCCS provides a discounted rate to our students at a cost of $102 per credit hour Most of the classes we offer will earn student 3 credits through UCCS so the general cost for each class is $306. Students and families are responsible for applying for the classes online and providing payment to the University when they register. Teachers will assist in the process and we will also coordinate fundraising opportunities to students who are in need.
14
Fundraising Opportunities King Soopers Cards (5% goes to your child’s credit, and this money keeps building all year long) D50 Scholarship Fund Car Washes Others TBD- we will send out info through the teachers as soon as we know If students wish to take advantage of these opportunities they will be required to volunteer their time, write application essays, and be actively involved in fundraisers. Start fundraising early!
