ENGINEERING BY DESIGN Engineering by Design™ is a standards-based K-12 instructional package for Technological Literacy developed by the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEES). In most instances Engineering by Design can be implemented using existing technologies commonly found in schools and technology programs. NYSSLS When are you planning to make changes to your curriculum? How are you facilitating the changes in your district? If you have decided to make changes, why are you starting now, or when are you planning to begin? Would you be interested in participating in a consortium to create curriculum for these new standards?

AP CAPSTONE FROM A STUDENT’S PERSPECTIVE
10
WHY AP CAPSTONE? AP Capstone was developed in response to feedback from higher education. The two AP Capstone courses, with their associated performance tasks, assessments, and application of research methodology, complement the rigor of AP courses and exams by equipping students with the power to analyze and evaluate information with accuracy and precision in order to craft and communicate evidence-based arguments. Analyze topics through multiple lenses to construct meaning or gain understanding Plan and conduct a study or investigation Propose solutions to real-world problems Plan and produce communication in various forms Collaborate to solve a problem Integrate, synthesize, and make cross-curricular connections

AP CAPSTONE PROGRAM Year 1, 2016-2017: AP Capstone – Seminar Year 2, 2017-2018: AP Capstone – Research
12
AP CAPSTONE- SEMINAR COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this foundational course, open to grades 10, 11 and 12, AP Seminar provides sustained practice of investigating issues from multiple perspectives and cultivates student writing abilities so they can craft, communicate, and defend evidence-based arguments. Students are empowered to collect and analyze information with accuracy and precision and are assessed through a team project and presentation, an individual written essay and presentation, and a written exam. The AP Capstone Seminar Exam score is based on all three components and is reported on the standard 1-5 scoring scale. Students who complete AP Capstone Seminar are invited to take AP Capstone Research in their 11 th or 12 th grade.
13
AP CAPSTONE – RESEARCH COURSE DESCRIPTION: In AP Research, students develop the skills and discipline necessary to conduct independent research to produce and defend a scholarly academic thesis. This course allows students to explore deeply an academic topic, problem, or issue of individual interest and through this inquiry, students design, plan, and conduct a year-long mentored, research-based investigation. The course culminates in an academic thesis paper of approximately 5,000 words and a presentation, performance, or exhibition with an oral defense.
14
AP CAPSTONE “GRADUATES” Upon completion of both AP Capstone courses (Seminar and Research), with scores of 3 or higher on both exams, students will receive an AP Capstone Certificate. Those students who achieve scores of 3 or higher in both courses, in addition to earning a 3 or higher on 4 or more other AP exams will be awarded the AP Capstone Diploma. According to College Board, AP Capstone can lead to a future in: 46 college majors and 98 careers 163 colleges and universities have developed credit and placement policies for AP Capstone
