The Integration of Educational Technology into the Intermediate LoS Elementary Curriculum By: Jennifer Pattison jeneckpat@gmail.com
2
Key Terms LoS - a Levels of Service talent development model to discover, develop and apply the many talents of students. Educational technology - is the practice of improving student learning and performance by creating, using, and managing technological processes and resources for classroom instruction. Computer-based technology - encompasses software, hardware, Internet applications, and computer-based multimedia as tools for learning Technology integration - the use of computer-based tools to teach educational curriculum while developing student technology skills
3
Purpose of the Study Link current research on educational technology to data I collect from my own learning/teaching environment to create a plan to better integrate educational technology into the LoS curriculum. Investigate how my colleagues and I currently use educational technology in LoS instruction and LoS students’ perceptions and attitudes towards teacher technology usage. Improve my technology teaching skills and my students’ technology skills while increasing their interest and learning.
4
Literature Review A discrepancy exists between exemplary teachers’ use of technology and descriptions of best practices in literature (Ertmer, Gopalakrishnan, and Ross, 2001). Student learning increased with technology vs. without. Student evaluations were positive of instructional units with a technological component ( Taylor, Casto, and Walls, 2004). Teachers learn and adopt technology best through training and support that is mentored and collaborative (O’Bannon and Judge, 2004-2005). Effective professional learning experiences are transferred to instructional practices through collaborative apprenticeships and modeling of educational technology (Glazer, Hannafin, and Song, 2005).
5
Why is this important? Researchers on educational technology are practicing university professors and have not dealt with the reality of implementing this research into the elementary setting. Research on best practices for integration of educational technology is difficult to find. It’s theoretical and lacks a working framework for implementation into one’s practice. They all say this is what’s best, yet no one’s saying here’s how to do it.

Data Sources Student & Teacher Surveys Reflective Journal Student Artifacts Audio & Video Recordings Surveys were created using Google Docs. Participating students and teachers answered questions and wrote short responses to determine their perceptions and attitudes toward educational technology usage. Anecdotal notes and observations of technology lessons from my classroom entered into a daily lesson plan book. Observations included student responses, success or lack of success of lesson, and notes for improvement. LoS student work from my classroom including: a) Word processed readers response letters, biography reports, and writing assignments and b) Blogs used for literature circles discussions Tapings of my LoS lessons using educational/instruct ional technology for performance poetry, biography reports, PowerPoint presentations, and Google Earth tours.

Action Plan for Computer-based Technology Usage Findings from Research Actions Targeted to FindingsWho Implements & Monitors A.P. Timeline 1.Need to integrate more software other than Microsoft Office 2.No common use of websites or educational computer games 3.Increase computer-based technology multimedia 1.Use Google Earth, Photostory, Movie Maker, and Excel into Projects 2.Create a list of approved websites and games & post on LoS website 3.Increase Skype, Moodle, and SmartBoards usage in LoS curriculum 1.T 2.T, Los C, ITA 3.T, LoS C, STA Ongoing during school year

Action Plan for Teaching Strategies Used in Educational Technology Instruction Findings from Research Actions Targeted to FindingsWho Implements & Monitors A.P. Timeline 1.Increase computer assessment usage 2.Provide more computer-based instruction in partner groupings decrease time in whole class instruction 1.Post quizzes online, use Word to give editorial feedback and assess papers. Videotape and use rubrics for student assessments. 2.Set up computer with dual seating. Facing SmartBoard. Record lessons on SB and loop during work time. 1.T 2.T, ITA Ongoing during school year Beginning of school year

Action Plan for Problems with Current Educational Technology Usage Findings from Research Actions Targeted to FindingsWho Implements & Monitors A.P. Timeline 1.Lack of prep & class time for educational technology 2.Desire for more professional development to use the resources available 3.System limitations 4.Students need face to face interaction 5.Internet access not available to all at home 1.Collaborate and share lessons with other LoS instructors. 2.Schedule tech development during monthly LoS meetings Instructional tech advisor 3.Educate myself on system limits by talking with school and system tech advisors 4.Alternate tech usage one class online, one class live face-to- face discussions. Mix it up 5.Find extra class time for students who don’t have internet at home during computer lab or in class when caught up 1.T, Los C 2.T, LoS C, ITA 3.T, ST, SSTA 4.T 5.T, CT, STA Ongoing during school year Beginning of school year Ongoing during school year
