MORE INEQUALITIES Pre-AICE Algebra I

QUIZ TIME GOOD LUCK  May the force be with you!

Quiz Review/Homework Check

I will be able to… Justify the steps used to solve an inequality Solve word problems using inequalities

Step Justification for Inequalities Step justification for Inequalities is the same as step justification for equations. The only difference is instead of saying “subtraction property of equality” you say “subtraction property of inequality.”

Example #1 Identify the property that justifies each step.  Step 1: -6 ≤ -2x + 3  Step 2: -6 + (-3) ≤ -2x + 3 + (-3)  Step 3: -9 ≤ -2x  Step 4:  Step 5:

Example #2 Using the solved inequality below, write the letter of the correct step justification for each step on the lines provided. Choose the properties from the boxes below. -3x + 12 ≤ 3(-3x + 2) -3x + 12 + 3x ≤ -9x + 6 + 3x _______ _______ 0 + 12 ≤ -9x + 6 + 3x 12 ≤ -9x + 3x + 6 _______ _______ 12 ≤ -6x + 6 12 - 6 ≤ -6x + 6 – 6 _______ 6 ≤ -6x + 0 6 ≤ -6x 6 ≥ -6x_______ 6 ≥ x -1 ≥ x

Example #3 The maximum safe load of a chairlift is 680 pounds. Suppose the weight of a person in the lift is 124 pounds and the weight of their bicycle is 32 pounds. How much additional weight can the chairlift safely carry?

Example #4 The Student Government Association votes to buy food for a local food bank. A case of 12 jars of spaghetti sauce costs $13.75. What is the greatest number of cases of sauce the student council can buy if they use at most $216 for this project?

Example #5 Select values for a and b so that the solution set for the inequality 3x – a < b is x < 6. Show that your inequality has the correct solution.

Example #6 The airport parking lot charges $2.00 to enter and $3.00 per hour after that. Carmen has n dollars and wants to be able to determine the maximum number of hours she can park. How can Carmen determine the length of time she can afford to park her car in the parking lot?

What You Should Be Doing Now… CW: What Do You Call Drilling 4,876 Holes? / Why Was Professor Clabberhead Utterbunk Holding Up a Piece of Bread? HW: Practice More Inequalities Sample Assessment Unit 2  COMPLETE Tonight and do You Be The Judge (online)
