Dystopian conventions By Moses and Hugo

Setting: Future

The future is a very common time setting for films of the dystopian genre; this is partly due to the genres close ties to science fiction and also because of the underlying fear of technology taking control of our lives. This fear is expressed in GATTACA through the intricate systems of classification used to oppress the under class of “god-children”.

Anti-Hero Character; Anti-Hero

In Gattaca, Vincent is the anti hero. We see him rise up against the totalitarian system which has been oppressing him and others like him for being “invalid”. This convention of an anti-hero fighting to change an oppressive system is common throughout many dystopian films.

Controlled society Themes; Extreme control!!!

In GATTACA we see many examples of extreme governmental control, which is present in many dystopian films. Everyday Jerome must undergo a blood screening to prove that he is the “valid” person he says he is. This is enforced by the corporation by the corporation for which he works (GATTACA), but is also shown in the almost absolute power to test people, granted to the police.

Setting; Polarity

This is when we see utopian features in society juxtaposed with dystopian features. This is shown through one end of society living well off the wealth they have earned with their artificially altered DNA and the other struggling to make ends meet because their un-altered DNA condemns them to a life of poverty.
