Catalyst Coalition Mission: To use our community's collaborative strength to address and combat underage use of alcohol, marijuana and other drugs in Napa County. History: In 2005, the Napa County Office of Education collaborated with agency partners to bring a Drug Free Communities Support Program funded by the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to Napa County and the Catalyst Coalition was born. There are teams in Calistoga, St. Helena, Napa and American Canyon comprised of a diverse group of community members. Successes: Social Host Ordinance; Red Ribbon Week; Every 15 Minutes; Physician’s Screening Initiative; Be AHead of the Crowd: Use your brain, not weed; numerous educational presentations, collaborations, and events

About the “CHKS” Survey Napa County has surveyed youth every two years since 1999 The survey is conducted for all 7 th, 9 th and 11 th graders in the county, and Non Traditional School Students (all grades) The sample sizes for schools are “statistically valid”; 60%+ students participate Surveys are conducted in Fall of odd years

Drugging and Driving 31% of 11 th Graders report “yes” to driving a car or been in a car with a friend when he/she was using marijuana. Researchers have found that drivers who had used marijuana within three hours of beginning to drive had nearly double the risk of causing a collision, especially those that were fatal.

Youth & Medical Marijuana 61% of 9th graders and 63% of 11th graders said that students who use marijuana usually get others to buy it for them from a marijuana dispensary 46% of 9th graders and 48% of 11th graders said that students who use marijuana buy it themselves from a marijuana dispensary (with a medical marijuana card or a physician’s recommendation).

Marijuana Use & Adolescents Regular use in adolescence lowers IQ 8 pts. Users report less life satisfaction, lower academic & career achievement, and poorer mental & physical health Marijuana is an addictive drug that can cause serious risks and consequences “Children who use marijuana are more likely to struggle in school”

Youth Marijuana Prevention Initiative Each City Team has a marijuana prevention plan Collaborated with H&HS ADS on county strategic plan – marijuana is one of 3 key issues identified Be AHead of the Crowd: Use your brain, not weed Logo & tagline informed by youth/adult focus groups PSA in movie theaters Used media channels (e-newsletter, website, Facebook, Napa Valley Register, etc.) to reinforce prevention message Informational brochure sent home through middle & high schools Stickers distributed through pizza restaurants and Board Garden Proclamation signed by health & education leaders including Dr. Barbara Nemko, Napa County Board of Education, Queen of the Valley Medical Center, St. Helena Hospital, and Advisory Board on Alcohol & Drugs
