18% Grey – the grey card All lights meters see a scene as a uniform shade – they ignore colours. That shade is 18% grey. This is complicated by cameras usually having three metering modes – spot, centre- weighted and ‘matrix’.

Spot Metering The camera meters the light indicated by the spot. Use this when there is a relatively small object within your scene which you need to be perfectly exposed. This method assures the subject will be correctly exposed in “difficult lighting situations” even though the background is too bright or too dark.

Center-Weighted Metering The camera meters the entire frame but assigns greatest value to the area indicated by the circle. Use centered weighted metering when there is a wide range of light within the frame by metering off the area you want correctly exposed. This is the classic metering technique for portraits.

‘Matrix’ Metering The camera meters the entire frame then sets exposure for the best overall image. This is used in most situations. Also known as ‘evaluative metering’.

You have 4 opportunities to control the exposure – shutter speed; aperture opening; film speed/sensitivity and light source. In the digital age you have another opportunity after taking the picture – post-processing. Further reading/research – metering methods, ETTR, HDR and exposure blending. Experimenting here is another opportunity for you to develop your own photographic style. Summary
