Hope Eternal Inheritance by Steve Zipf March 20, 2016

1 Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 2 GGF.church

Peter sets forth 5 relevant features of our eternal inheritance. 1. The Source of the believer's inheritance 2. The Motive of the believer's inheritance 3. The Appropriation of the believer's inheritance 4. The Nature of the believer's inheritance 5. The Security of the believer's inheritance 3 GGF.church

1. The Source of The Believer's Inheritance 2 Cor. 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort. Eph. 1:3,17 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ... that the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. 4 GGF.church

1:3a Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, The two are One! Whenever the N.T. calls God “Father,” it primarily denotes that He is the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ. John 10:30 But Jesus said “I and the Father are One” Rom. 15:6 … so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 5 GGF.church

Peter's Concentrated Confession v.3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Lord identifies Him as Sovereign Ruler Jesus as incarnate Son Christ as anointed Messiah King 6 GGF.church

1:3”…who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” Regeneration (spiritually reborn or converted) The specific act for which Peter blesses God The Goal of Regeneration is a “living hope”, a bright and glorious future ahead with out sin. 7 GGF.church

2. The Motive For The Believer's Inheritance “who according to His great mercy” Eph. 2:4-5 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ Mercy is not the same as Grace Mercy focuses on the sinners miserable condition Grace concerns his guilt which caused that condition 8 GGF.church

“who according to His great mercy” Rom. 9:15-16 For He says to Moses, "I WILL HAVE MERCY ON WHOM I HAVE MERCY, AND I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON WHOM I HAVE COMPASSION." So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy. Divine mercy takes the sinner from misery to glory (a change of condition) Divine grace takes him from guilt to acquittal (a change of position) 9 GGF.church

3. The Appropriation of the Believer's Inheritance “has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1:3c) Man's condition needs to change! Jer. 17: 9 "The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? He needs to repent of his sinful condition Mark 1:15 "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel." 10 GGF.church

“ has caused us to be born again to a living hope ” “caused”( Gr.anagennao) 1) to produce again, be born again, born anew 2) to have one's mind changed so that he lives a new life and one conformed to God's will 2 Cor. 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away behold, new things have come. Born Again = “Living Hope” 11 GGF.church

Unbelievers are Without Hope Eph. 2:12 remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 12 GGF.church

1:3 “has caused us to be born again to a living hope” Believers have a living Undying Hope Hebrews 6:19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil Ps 33:18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, On those who hope for His loving kindness Ps. 39:7 "And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You. 13 GGF.church

John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. We have this compelling privilege to share this hope with those around us!!! 14 GGF.church

4. The Nature of the Believer's Inheritance “to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away” The inheritance is the believers already by title, being actually assigned to Him; the entrance on its position is future, and hoped for as a certainty. 15 GGF.church

Background for the inheritance is the O.T. Gen. 50:24 Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die, but God will surely take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob." Joshua 11:23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD had spoken to Moses, and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. Thus the land had rest from war. 16 GGF.church

Old Covenant Promise Num. 34:2 "Command the sons of Israel and say to them, 'When you enter the land of Canaan, this is the land that shall fall to you as an inheritance, even the land of Canaan according to its borders. Deut. 31:7 Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance. 17 GGF.church

Peter makes the connection with the earthly inheritance to a spiritual inheritance in heaven 1 Peter 1:4a “to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away” Col.1:12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light. Col.3:24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. 18 GGF.church

Acts 20:32 "And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. Eph. 1:11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, 19 GGF.church

A New Covenant Heb. 9:15 For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place (Jesus) for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. 20 GGF.church

“imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away” Imperishable (Gr.aphtharton) refers to what is not corruptible, not liable to death, or not subject to destruction. Undefiled (Gr. amianton) describes things that are unstained or unpolluted by sin. Will not fade away (Gr. amaranton) (unique to Peter) describes a flower that did not wither or die 21 GGF.church

Time or sin cannot touch our inheritance Lk 12:33 Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. 2 Cor. 5:1 For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 22 GGF.church

1 Peter 1:4 “to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you” Churches Unfading Inheritance 1 Peter 5:4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 23 GGF.church

5. The Security of The Believer's Inheritance “reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time” (1:4b-5) Our inheritance cannot die or be removed, now Peter adds “reserved in heaven”. 24 GGF.church

The same term used here (reserved) as watching carefully over ones moral life. 1Tim. 5:22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure. Jude 1 To those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ. 25 GGF.church

God's power continually protects His elect Rom. 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? Jude 24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, (literally,”exempt from falling) 26 GGF.church

Our protection comes by faith 1 John 5:4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. John 10:28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 27 GGF.church

It takes Faith to trust in God, but God energizes our faith so we can trust in Him!! 28 GGF.church

Salvation means “rescue” or “deliverance” 1:5b “…for a Salvation ready to be revealed” Salvation is a past occurrence with future results There are three parts to Salvation 1. Justification--When one believes in Christ 2. Sanctification--literally “you are having been saved” 3.Glorification--Our eternal inheritance in His presence 29 GGF.church

2 Tim. 4:18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Rejoice!!! 30 GGF.church
