FAQs for Unbroken Project: Q: Should everyone in the group be writing vocabulary word sentences? A: Yes. Even though one group member is the “vocabulary expert,” that person’s job is to vigilantly look for the words and point them out. Then everyone should write them down on the sheet of notebook paper with definitions that most students started last week. (If you never got to start the list, do that today.) Q: When the group’s “device detective” finds a literary device, are we supposed to keep track of it? A: Yes, but not for Chapter 1 or the Preface. Start noting devices in Chapter 2, and use your “Device Log” chart to record them (avg. TWO per chapter).

Directions: Write the sentence and then fill in the blanks. Afterward, use the information to complete the activity below. 15G. When an author sets off information in a single short sentence, this is a hint that he is emphasizing the power or importance of the information in that sentence. However, a string of short sentences is like a drum beat; this can be used to develop suspense or tension. On p. 80 (paperback version*), Hillenbrand narrates the aftermath of an air battle fought by Louie and his crewmates on their plane named Super Man. Find and copy the sentence that Hillenbrand includes in order to show its dramatic impact. *For other editions, just find the last section in Chapter 7. ANWER: “Super Man was nowhere in sight.” [This sentences is significant because it signals the grave danger in which the crew suddenly finds itself, so the sentence length (diction/ syntax) corresponds to the narrator’s tone.]
