Frederick Douglass’s Life Lived from 1817-1895 Douglass was a slave until the age of twenty when he escaped by impersonating a sailor. Douglass was always trying to learn. His career started in 1841, when he spoke at an anti-slavery convention in Bedford, Massachusetts.

What did Frederick Douglass do? Douglass was a key leader of the American Anti- Slavery Society or Abolitionists. He was also a very influential and eloquent speaker. Frederick Douglass changed his name when he escaped from slavery, he changed it from Bailey to Douglass.

What methods did Douglass use? Because Douglass was a writer he used the power of newspapers. He also wrote books to express his views. And because he had been well educated by his master’s wife he was an exceptional speaker.

Why was Frederick Douglass interesting? Douglass was the first black man to hold a rank in the U.S. Government.

Practical or Impractical? Practical- Douglass used his newspaper the North Star, which was dedicated to the abolition of slavery, to show his views.

What impact did Douglass have? His book was the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave is still considered one of the most eloquently written documents.
