CONVERSION OF EUROPE Pagan= follower of a polytheistic religion Missionary= tries to convert others to a particular religion St. Patrick Converts Ireland Sold into slavery as a child and eventually escaped Returned to Ireland to convert the Irish people to Christianity Founded hundreds of Christian churches After his death the church recognized him as a saint

Missionaries to Brittan Missionaries were sent by popes or leaders of the church in the early Middle Ages After the King of Kent converted to Christianity his subjects followed his example Over the next hundreds of years most of Britain became catholic

Christianity Spreads Through Europe By 700s and 800s Catholic missionaries were working in other parts of Europe Over time the Catholic faith became part of everyday life in most parts of Europe Holidays revolved around Christian tradition The Church became the center of European society

Christendom Eventually most people in Europe are untied under the Catholic faith Christendom is the large community of Christians spread across the world Gave the people of Europe a common identify and a sense of purpose
