Class Challenge! How many jobs are involved in producing your smart phone? Work in pairs to create the longest list you can in 5 minutes. Then share with the pair next to you to build and even longer list. Can you beat the Business Ambassadors list?

Learning Outcomes: To broaden the students understanding of the range of roles and jobs available in the working world, by exploring the number of jobs involved in producing a mobile phone. To introduce the idea that the job market changes. Key message: It is important to develop skills, qualities and achieve qualifications to allow you to take a job working in these newer areas as the job market changes.

Instruction: how many jobs challenge BA to ask how many students have a smart phone. hold up their own phone (and if teacher agrees students to get their phones out). Challenge is to create the longest list possible of all of the jobs involved in making that phone. Work in pairs to start then pairs to join and increase their lists. Feedback to create long list at the front. Discuss the list. Every component in a mobile phone is manufactured; so materials scientists, plastic manufacturers, box designers, app designers are significant and digital skills are in short supply. 10 years ago we did not prepare for this explosion in technology being used. BA to ensure every aspect is considered including commercial considerations, profitability, brand awareness, advertising etc. Some more unusual jobs involved in making a phone. That you would not have predicted as growing 10 years ago: Batteries contain rare earth elements that needs to be mined mostly in China. So mining and shipping to bring the elements used in smaller batteries to the manufacturer. GPS – maps location tracking, directions etc. Downloading music or streaming music. Buying online involves secure payment processing. Branding for products sold online as well as the branding and marketing of phone companies. Software development for apps. In every company there is accountancy/bookkeeping, HR, recruitment, training etc. all the central services. All these jobs are involved in smart phones. The iPhone came onto the market in 2007.
